I usually travel to North Jersey once a month, Now in 2022, there is ALWAYS a delay, service interruption or something going on when I am traveling. Do I have bad luck or it is service getting worse?

3 times in the past 5 months or so (I only go in to ny like 1-3 times every 6 or so weeks), the train is about to leave penn and they announce that everyone has to get off because the train can’t leave the station due to an issue

It’s very good everywhere except the NEC and tunnel. Amtrak owns that territory and they’ve been falling apart and gumming everything up.

OTOH, it’s been ~5 years (2017) since Governor Murphy’s been in office that the fares haven’t increased, so there’s some merit in that. Could be optimistic or a pipe dream bus/train/light rail fares wouldn’t have a fare hike throughout his 3 remaining years, but one can dream given the current plans for expansion, and acquiring new e-buses, new rail cars (& expanding routes), and maybe something in store for the 3 light rail networks. Not to mention the gradual increase in pay for workers (& professionals) of NJ Transit, pensions, placating labor union concerns, etc.
However the transit agency’s always been shafted for years, and it’s been a recurring joke. Maybe 2023 would see a visible rebound?

I commute to Newark from Central Jersey or North Jersey 4 days a week since april 2021, and haven't had a delay in a very long time.
Except I don't use the tunnel at NY Penn.
The NJCL, RVL, and Morristown/Essex Lines have been great. NJCL in the summer, RVL and Morristown at least once each week for different office visits.
The last delay or cancelation I remember was the strike this summer, but I took the path to Newark and Ubered home, so not that big of deal. At most I've had a 5 minute delay or the app stopped working but the trains were still running.

The tunnel is where a lot of delays happen, which ripple throughout the NEC, and beyond. The infrastructure is over a century old and maintenance is always kicked down the road. Things are finally being funded but there is A LOT of backlog to catch up on.

They are decades behind in maintenance and funding thanks to the previous republican administration. They used to have one of the best track records around. They are actually getting better, however now that they have funding again, a lot of their equipment is being overhauled and repaired since it was put off for so long, leaving fewer engines in rotation for when something goes wrong.

the last time njt was mostly reliable was basically 2009. guess who happened to get elected that year and proceeded to slash and burn njt's budget to the bone in order to fuel his political ambitions by trying to make suburban nimbys happy.

They were one of the best commuter railroads in the nation before the previous administration ran them into the ground and under funded them.
