Doesn't that always happen? You find a great local place, a real hole in the wall. Then other people also find it because the food is so good. In order to accommodate more people, they expand to a bigger place or maybe multiple locations and suddenly the quality drops.

And then you long for those days when it was a hole in the wall

town hall deli...is that the one that's on a narrow street and you kind of walk down into it? it rings a bell because there was a deli we had as a customer that was on my route in south orange, but this was over three years ago now.

i remember the delivery entrance being on the side and there was a vacant lot next to it and IIRC, a parking garage across the street. it was also on a bit of an incline.

if it is the same deli, they were really nice people to deal with. i never ate there, but they always paid on time, never complained about orders, always offered food and drinks...that's the kind of stuff delivery guys appreciate too. even if it's just a bottle of water on a hot summer day.

2

BiggyShake t1_j2euhxq wrote

That's the one. That is actually their new location. I forget where the old one was.

2

sushig00se t1_j2evmwc wrote

if I were still with the company, I would be able to look back at their old invoices, assuming they were a customer before moving as well.

regardless, places like that used to actually make me smile when I would finish the delivery because it reminded me that there is hope for humanity. a lot of places wouldn't let you use the bathroom, make you stand around for 45 minutes while they write a check out that would normally bounce anyway, tell you to drop 40 cases of product in one place and then change their mind 5 minutes later. never had an issue even remotely close to that with them.

now ashley marketplace in south orange on the other hand... nice place and nice people for the most part, but I won't get into anymore detail because that is not the point of this thread and I don't want to steer it in that direction.

Fun fact the name Sloppy Joe, for both sandwiches, came from the same Cuban restaurant. Some people had memorable ground beef sandwiches from there which caught on as a ‘Sloppy Joe’.

As for the NJ version, a politician went down there and the same restaurant served a bread, cheese, and meat spread where people made there own sandwiches. He came back up to Jersey and asked a local deli to supply a similar spread. It caught on (very locally) especially because Jewish delis already made a similar-ish sandwich.

So there both names Sloppy Joe for the same reason, yet there completely different and not even closely related sandwiches. Couldn’t be more Jersey if they tried!
