cool....I love the old/new side-by-side shots.

I think there was at least 1 other build between those pix.

Crazy how there was more protection for pedestrians on the old bridge compared to nowadays when cars can easily go much faster.

it always amazes me just how much we've replaced our railway system with highways. imagine if you could take a train/trolly to the shore from middletown instead of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

What are the additional towers at the lighthouse?

Who remembers being stuck in the drawbridge traffic on the way to the beach?

Imagine all the political wheels we would have to grease to get a multi town rail from Middletown station thru Sandy hook.

And all the families we’d displace doing it.

But something alongside 36 which is filled with mostly derelict businesses and only a short walk from hazlet station (via airport plaza) could work ?

the one all the way on the right is the radio tower put up by Marconi. I think the first radio transmissions across the Atlantic were done from Navesink Light. I don't know what the other is.. water tower perhaps?

I use to live in Highlands when I was kid/teenager. I miss the small beach town life. I miss hearing the bridge horn go off when it had to go up and the sound of cars driving over it at night.

I did take some photos back in March 2003, nearly the same angle, of the bridge and of Highlands and Sandy Hook if you want to check them out.
