I just renewed by license and got the standard which has NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES printed on the license. I'm living out of state for grad school right now so I had no idea about this REAL ID thing but looks like I have until 2025 to figure that out or can just get a passport card to supplement my actual passport.

Anyway, has anyone run into issues getting served? I feel like a server would see that stamp NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES and think it's fake if they have no clue what it means - i mean i literally thought what the NJMVC sent me in the mail was fake copy until they sent me the real one.

Real ID is largely just for travel, not so much for standard identification in these situations. I've heard more people having issues with the new licenses not feeling the same (too thin/papery) and that making out of state places think they are fake rather than them saying "not for real ID purposes" on it.

Real ID is nationwide so no, you wouldn't have an issue.

not sure why you're getting issues like that. every state basically does a "not for real id purposes".

You’ll be fine! That’s just the standard ID they’ve always given out, they just like to make everything as confusing as possible lol. REAL ID is a new thing airports and other high-security places are transitioning to, but we won’t need it in NJ till 2025, I think. But that’s all you’d need it for, for now at least (but again, probs not till ‘25). Bars/restaurants/other day-to-day things won’t give you any problems

I have to attach a photocopy of my license to applications all over the country for work. Occasionally I will get a response from the clerk I sent the paperwork to wondering why it says Not for Real ID Purposes across the top of it. But after I explain and they google to verify, it ends up going through.

It's also used to enter federal buildings otherwise you need a passport to get in.

I haven’t had any problems. But I’m over 40 so maybe that’s why.
