You have probably seen them flying around but didn't realize they were vultures. They are all over the place

Yeah along with Red Tailed Hawks, vultures are all over Short Hills and the Chatham/Chatham Township Area.

This is how they clean themselves. The UV light from the sun kills the bacteria that gets on them while they eat.

Fun fact: when vulture populations in India recently underwent a steep decline, cases of rabies, anthrax, and plague increased due to feral dog populations filling the niche that vultures occupied.

Wouldn't this happen as they are flying around anyway? I've only seen them do this at our farm in the morning after they roosted for the night on our fences before they take off.

I had no idea that’s what they were doing. I knew they were sunning themselves. I always assumed they were just warming up.

Yes its a turkey vulture. There are also a ton of black vultures in NJ. As a sidenote vultures are one of the few birds that have a sense developed of smell. Other birds do not.

Definitely turkey vultures. You can tell by the white on the underside of the wings. We also have black vultures.
