This would be quite convenient and many other states are starting to implement it. Does anyone know if it’s something being considered for us in the Garden State?

That’s still putting your phone in “plain sight”. They can say they saw an alert or anything they want to legally obtain that phone.
And remember it’s pretty grey if you can refuse your face to unlock a phone. Courts seem to think it’s ok for the most part to be required to.
You need to be really trusting of that officer.
There’s a reason so many security conscious people lock down their phones at TSA checkpoints disabling Face ID etc.
Until they prohibit physical cards, that’s all I’d give them.

I totally understand your skepticism, but having it as an option would be nice. Also it would be an NFC exchange, you would tap your phone to a scanner like Apple Pay.

Plus it would be nice to be able to use it as an ID for purposes other than traffic stops.

I'd already do this to show them my insurance card tbh, so what's the matter? I'm really not sure why I'd care anyway. I know it's the classic "if I have nothing to hide" argument, but seriously I'd take my license on my phone in a heartbeat.

There is no reason why we should even have to carry our drivers license. Police can already pull up your license information from you either giving your name and birthday, or license plate.
Fining people for forgetting their license at home is a money grab.
Now for proof when you visit private businesses maybe this can be useful and you can pull up your info on your apple wallet.

This (to be used as a general ID) is what I was mainly referring to, and I probably should’ve said that cuz this post was (justifiably) not received well.

For general ID I think it's a decent idea. Consider that they haven't been able to roll our the REAL ID yet for flights either.

You mean we should all have a state ID with driving privileges stated in the digital file associated with it?
solesme t1_j5lolt3 wrote
I mean we shouldn’t get fined while driving without the license in our possession. For private business such as to identify yourself you should be able to use a digital ID.

I sure as hell hope not.

Why not? It would be very convenient; I already only keep my insurance card in the Geico app.
dryerasenerd t1_j5jqgrf wrote
We have a barcode on the back of the card already. We don't need a new protocol to handle this.
The registration is from the state and attached to the car. They don't need the card.
Insurance is attached to the car and required for registration. So we shouldn't need to hand that over either.
The car is registered to a person and cops should be able to get information on a person that owns the car which is most of the time.
What I'm saying is that most of the time nothing is actually needed that they shouldn't be able to get from a license plate.
NJ is not an efficient state when it comes to bureaucracy (or they like potentially screwing people, which matches my experience with firearms ownership in this state).

Fuck no. Jesus christ why would one do this?
sharkethic86 t1_j5l9ib3 wrote
Why WOULDN'T I? I already use my phone for tap to pay, have my insurance card in the Geico app, etc. I can still carry my license if I want, but the option for it to be in my phone would be awesome.

To not carry a wallet 🤷🏼♂️

From the company that brought us stalker 3000 (aka the airtag), you want them to have your address, photo, and whatever else is on a license.

You don’t think apple has addresses and photos already?

You going to allow the cop to take your phone back to his car?

God I hope not. I value my privacy more than inane “convenience”

Your "privacy"? Laughable concept if you're already carrying around a phone everywhere, and I'm willing to bet you already have personal info scattered all across the internet. I'd 100% take my license in my Apple Wallet.
