You should've seen it before 9/11. So fucking easy to fake.

Laminated pieces of white poster board with a tiny picture of your face. You could fake it with poster board from the supermarket, pictures you got developed, a type writer, and a laminating machine.

....I assume

Most other states have outsourced it. You go to the DMV and they give you a paper temporary ID and then a week later you get the real thing and it’s a super advanced ID with cool security features.

I said the same thing when I got my new one, it looks absolutely fake.

NJ and NYC had the two most fakeable licenses until a little after 9/11.

I went to college in New England so there and whenever I travelled to a different state EVERYONE always triple checked it and quizzes me about my data until like 2010 LOL

I got the paper "THIS IS A REAL DOCUMENT FOR NOW" when I got my motorcycle endorsement in 2021. The real one came 3 weeks later in the mail. Same deal later in 2021 when I did a renewal+real ID upgrade.

Anyone have a generic image of what they look like? Can't find it on Google.

Could someone explain to me what a “Real ID” drivers license means?

I recently got one and the only difference I noticed from my previous/regular NJ drivers license is a gold star.

I understand that after the (latest) time extension only a Real ID would be acceptable for a domestic flight.

it means one that meets the criteria of the real id law. it's has extra scrutiny so you are who you say you are, are legally here, etc. law went into effect in 2005, naturally the feds did not give the states a red cent to implement it, and they've had to extend the compliance date for over a decade at this point.

it's supposed to end up that you can't use your license as the id you need to show upon entering a federal building or getting thru tsa security at the airport. if you have a passport/passport card, those will always be acceptable id

A few weeks ago, one of my sister's friends was showing me their fake ID... I said, "no way this gets you in anywhere." This week, my new one comes in the mail and I'm convinced that the fake one was of higher quality than my official one.

my first license was on something like brown-red safety paper, print from a daisy wheel printer, no photo, no lamination. Kind of like a wallet size auto title. Well into the 80s like this if I recall correctly.
