Remember, "nonprofit" just means that they don't have investors and instead must spend all the money they take in on salaries, business trips, events, etc.

As a former nonprofit exec, the core of my training throughout my career was “nonprofit is a tax status, not a business model”

Churches all feel that way as well.

Universities too. Nothing says "non-profit" like Alabama and USC selling $75 football jerseys and $15 beers at a concession stand, during games which CBS and ESPN pay them billions to broadcast, and whose coaches are the highest paid "educators" in the state.

The coach is usually the highest-paid state employee. I still love SEC football, though.

Our local uni owns a network of hospitals and an assload of property and every time they go to our local or state government to ask them for more of my money someone on their executive board who makes 8 figures/year reminds us that they're a non-profit, that all they want to do is serve the community and that actually we're very fortunate and grateful that they're here at all.

He's a popular politician who easily won re-election and was in no danger of ever losing his seat, and is now stepping down not even a year into his term to do something that had likely been in the works since before he won re-election, likely because he didn't like being a lame duck member of congress. Couldn't be bothered to finish the term he promised he would and he's not leaving because of some sort of medical issue, just greed. Actions like these are exactly what chips away at what little faith people still have in politicians and is a smack in the fact to his constituents.

I honestly expected better from someone like Cicillini. He really seemed to be the rare member of congress that actually cared.

TLDR: Another greedy politician abandons his commitment to his constituents for cushy high paying job.

Full statement:

> Earlier today it was announced that the Rhode Island Foundation has selected me to serve as its President and CEO, and I will be stepping down from office as a Member of Congress effective June 1, 2023.

>I first want to express that serving the people of Rhode Island’s First Congressional District has been the honor of my life. For more than a decade, the residents of the First District entrusted me with a sacred duty to represent them in Congress, and it is a responsibility I put my heart and soul into every day to make life better for Rhode Islanders.

>The chance to lead the Rhode Island Foundation was unexpected, but it is an extraordinary opportunity to have an even more direct and meaningful impact on the lives of residents and families of our state.

>The same energy and commitment I brought to elected office, I will now bring as CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation, advancing their mission to ensure all Rhode Islanders can achieve economic security, access quality, affordable healthcare, and attain the education and training that will set them on a path to prosperity.

>I write today to convey my deepest and most sincere gratitude to the residents of the First Congressional District. I am extremely grateful for the support of the people of Rhode Island, my dedicated staff, and the help of the many organizations and individuals that I have had the privilege to partner with over the past twelve years.

>While my role will change in the months ahead, my commitment to serving Rhode Islanders will remain as strong as ever as I lead the Rhode Island Foundation through this next exciting period of transformational change in our state.

>I will remain in office until I officially submit my resignation to the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and Governor McKee on May 31, 2023. Constituents can continue contacting my office for assistance with federal agencies and to share your opinion or request information on pending legislative matters before Congress. After June 1, 2023, members of my staff will continue to operate offices in both Rhode Island and Washington, D.C. under the supervision of the Clerk of the House of Representatives until a new Member of Congress is elected. My office will provide additional information in the weeks ahead regarding this transition period.

>As President and CEO of one of the largest and oldest nonprofit community foundations in the nation, I look forward to continuing to engage with you in this new role and expanding on the work I have led for nearly thirty years in helping to improve the lives of all Rhode Islanders.

>I once again extend my genuine and heartfelt appreciation for the honor to have served as your representative in the United States Congress.

Why even run? What a scumbag. This isn't a job it's an obligation. Imagine a soldier quitting a year into service.
