So passengers were kept in the plane on the tarmac for two hours with a possible bomb threat?

Tangurena t1_jc6wan4 wrote

I lived in Ireland during "The Troubles". This sort of thing was common. Another way of dealing with bomb threats was drive the plane away from the terminal, down a taxiway and then make everyone get off the plane, take all the luggage out of the plane and then make everyone identify their suitcases. If there was a suitcase left over, everyone and every suitcase got off the plane again. If the suitcase was still there the second time, the Army took the suitcase and blew it up.

In Belfast, you left your shopping bags outside of stores (because the IRA would hide bombs in shopping bags and leave them to explode inside stores). No one would steal your bags because they might be bombs.

jbob88 t1_jc62a5x wrote

That's a fair question but how else would you go about searching for a device? If you evacuate everyone, it would be really easy for the culprit to slink away in the chaos.

[deleted] t1_jc7xw94 wrote

That happened to me back in 2013. We had suspicious people on our flight who were refusing to sit down the entire trip. Pilot received a bomb threat. They flew us and landed us at our destination and taxied the plane all the way out in the middle of the tarmac. SWAT showed up and surrounded the plane and searched all the undercarriage bags and one by one search us as they de boarded us. Then they put us on a bus and released us at the airport.

-Wicked- t1_jc40ymh wrote

I'm guessing a big misunderstanding as one passenger exiting the lavatory warned another passenger that they just left a huge bomb in there...

mike_e_mcgee t1_jc4whcm wrote

On the local Burlington subreddit yesterday they said graffiti at the airport implied there was a bomb on the plane. Local reddit is always right, so take that to the bank.

walkandtalkk t1_jc5s6wg wrote

Perhaps Reddit can identify the boy with a backpack who did it.

Apparently one of the local NBC reporters was on the plane and live tweeting the experience.

  • Still on the runway. It’s been about 1.5 hours since we’ve landed. Everyone is calm on the flight. We’re just wondering what is going on.

  • We are on a United flight. Pilot told us we are not allowed to take anything in the overhead bins

  • Plane was from Newark to Burlington. Lots of police and emergency crews out on the runway. It’s been almost 2 hours.

  • 6:35 p.m. - People are getting frustrated. They want to know what’s going on. It’s been almost 2 hours since we’ve landed. Flight attendants told us to expect law enforcement officers on the plane. We’re not allowed to touch or take anything in the overhead bins.

  • 6:43 p.m. VSP on flight with K9 searching the plane. They said there was a note found with a threat. We’re now getting off the plane.

  • 6:54 p.m. just got off the flight. Everyone escorted into btv airport. we weren’t allowed to take anything but phone and ID. Said we are getting an update.

  • 7:08 p.m. A note saying there was a Device on plane was reported. Federal authorities, BPD, VSP, BTV airport officials giving an update and going through the entire plane. We’re not sure when we will get our stuff.

Vermont has an airport?

slippery_eagle t1_jc4ewfk wrote

I think we have 10 whole gates. Even have a few places to eat.

Embarrassed-Koala t1_jc526h4 wrote

16 gates if I remember right. I got stuck there for 12 hours once. They were the most serious airport I’ve ever been to when it came to security.

Remote_Bumblebee2240 t1_jc56d0a wrote

15 according to the world wide interweb.

Hey fellow Vermonters!

Probably not the right place to ask, but would you recommend Vermont for someone Asian trying to get away from the south?

Remote_Bumblebee2240 t1_jc656yl wrote

Like anywhere, there's a couple bad eggs, and since I'm white there's bound to be things I don't come into contact with. But I will say that once you get past the gruff New England exterior, most people take pride in not being racists. I heard it said that west coast folks are nice but not kind, and east coast folks are kind but not nice and it's a pretty good description, lol. If you break down it's really likely someone will pull over and help you out, but they might give you shit about your car while they're fixing it.

My hometown is a whopping 2500 people and we have a Chinese restaurant run by a Chinese family. They've been here for almost 30 years and their child was born here. He's now working at a local store and is managing the younger kids. My brother used to work for his family and back in the day my friends and I used to frequent their place. I can't speak for other people but my friends and I always considered them part of the community and we were on a comfortable joking level familiarity. The father would mess with us and we had some pretty hilarious times there. Again, I'm speaking for my friends and myself, but we always were ready to call out the bigots. Definitely there were a few parties where we actively confronted ignorant rednecks, sometimes ending in fights. We weren't afraid to put the fear of hippies into those types of assholes.

Vermonters tend to be pretty progressive. It was the first state to give women the right to vote way back in the day and the first state to vote to allow gay marriage.

I wish I could answer more thoroughly, but i have experienced all this from a white perspective. From my limited observations though, I think most people are more curious than hostile. I won't say racism is non existent here. I've spoken to some people who have definitely had some negative experiences. And a few of my friend from high school who are black had some scary ones growing up.

I know Vermont is making efforts to get new people moving into the state. And while the population is very white, it's getting more diverse which is nice to see.

I guess the short answer is yes, I do think it's better up here compared to the south, racially speaking. Although that's a low bar to pass.

Thank you very much for your reply. I’ve been doing a lot of research, and I definitely have to visit during the depths of winter, so see if a southerner can handle actual winter, lol, but it helps talking to people in a position to know :-)

slippery_eagle t1_jc69u3z wrote

Just avoid certain places. You'll be fine in Burlington (expensive) or montpelier. I think Brattleboro is fairly progressive but I don't live down there.

Lower-Blackberry-716 t1_jc7bkp9 wrote

I'm from Texas and currently working/living in Brattleboro and it seems to be pretty progressive also.

slippery_eagle t1_jc7da6j wrote

I almost moved there but my son didn't want to leave his school. Good thing because I met my wonderful boyfriend here 💕 I do like it down there, though.

Thank you for your reply, I’ve been doing my research and I still need to visit, but it helps talking to people who know the area :-)

slippery_eagle t1_jc7cyhw wrote

You're very welcome. It's a wonderful place and I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Of course we have our problems like any other place.

Icantredditgood t1_jc7iw5o wrote

Yeah, I don’t expect Vermont to be a fairytale land that solves all my problems, but from all the research I’ve done, it seems like it’s possibly the best state in the country for me, possibly best state full stop :-)

slippery_eagle t1_jc69od8 wrote

I went through security once with a metal water bottle that had a tiny bit of water in it. Tsa told me I had to go through the line again after drinking the rest of it or throw the bottle away. Fortunately there were only 4 or 5 other people in line so I was able to get back through security in no time.

My digital camera set off the sensor once, so the dude completely unpacked my carryon. I’m a ballerina and was on my way to ballet stuff, so I think I had like 9 pairs of pointe shoes in there to unpack. I remember people chuckling as they passed me, and I thought, yep. Deadly dancer over here.

If you ever get a chance to fly into or from the Burlington airport you 100% should. See also: the Itty bitty airport in Traverse city, Michigan

Th3_Admiral t1_jc4ntlw wrote

If you like Traverse City, check out some of the ones in the UP like Houghton or Marquette. The person x-raying your bags is the same one taking your tickets and wheeling the stairs out to the plane.

stinktoad t1_jc4os19 wrote

That's specifically why I like TC- it works like a real airport, just... So Tiny.

Jacobysmadre t1_jc55cjl wrote

It's cool for sure, if a little too busy these days. The east side of the state has some great stuff to do with like 1/100 of the people. Conclusion: Northern Michigan is pretty nice.

Manchester NH isn't too far. There's also a very small one gate airport in Lebanon NH. The plane seats 9 and if there isn't a co pilot, you get to sit in the front!! 11/10.

Funny story:

I arrived in West Lebanon and they literally just shove your bags through a window in the side of the building, so you know pretty quick if your luggage didn't make the connection. Mine didn't so I asked the guy unloading the luggage if there was anything else cause mine wasn't there. In a very classic gruff New England style he kinda barked "you gotta talk to the guy at the front desk". So I went to the *only desk and waited.

I shit you not, a few moments later THE SAME GUY walked up to the counter, pulled off his hat, and said "now, how can I help you?"

I'm still laughing years later.
