Is Carmy set to take over?

I was wondering if this was the same place they used for The Bear. Carmy can make a beef, that's for sure.

...Fuck now I want a beef and I don't live in Chicago anymore. Got a place doing Chicago style food but they want $10 for a beef.

That’s not far from the price of most beefs in the city now, sadly.

Sadly $10 bucks is cheap now. I don't know where you can get beef for under that. Southside staple Tony's Beef is over $10.

Johnnie's is barely under $10 last I checked. But it's close.

really? damn. I've tried theirs, it's pretty good but I thought the price was a bit steep for it.

Please tell me a chicago dog isn't $6 either.

I’m not really a hot dog person, but from what I’ve seen, those will usually run you $3-$4, maybe $5 with fries.

I’m sure I was exaggerating a bit, but I haven’t seen a beef for less than $7.50 in years. Normally in the city, I’m looking at $9.00+, especially when adding hot peppers (I also like cheese sauce on my beef, so that will often put me over $10.00).

With a name like that, it was a missed opportunity not to go into the candy business.

Jokes aside, I now regret not trying a sandwich there when I was in Chicago a few years ago.

I feel that it's telling about how truly beloved a person was in their community by the amount of well-meaning humor surrounding the announcement of their death.

The jokes in these comments about the man and his sandwiches are being told by people who remember him well for the place he held in their lives, and he himself would probably be laughing along with his former customers and fellow Chicagoans.

If you're a beef fan also consider Johnnie's in Elmwood Park, which is widely considered the champion here.

I moved from New Orleans to Chicago in 1985. The first apartment I got was a basement apartment in the building right next door to Mr. Beef. It was my introduction to the food scene of Chicago, and the standard for Italian beef for me.

I was just in Chicago a couple months ago. Got an Italian beef from Mr. Beef. I will say, a lot of the Chicago food staples are overrated. But this was genuinely one of the best "street food" sandwich shop Italian beefs I've had. A greasy treasure. They didn't skimp on the beef, it actually had flavor, the roll was crusty on top while a sopping mess on the bottom after 30 seconds, just pure perfection. If anyone is ever in the area I can't recommend visiting them enough. Get a sammich, they do live up to the hype.
