I imagine most long-standing museums have trafficked items

“Can we have it back?” 🥺

“Umm… no. We’re still looking at it.” 🧐 🎩

More like "No you cannot be trusted to protect your cultural artifacts. Only we can really appreciate your items. Yes, we know we stole them or "bought" them at gunpoint but no you cannot have them"

You know why the great pyramids are in Egypt, right?

Because they wouldn’t fit in the British Museum

I'm surprised they haven't tried at least taking one with them, like attempt to fully disassemble it , just to reassemble it later at the British museum. I can almost see it as a Monty python sketch where they fuck it up tremendously and then end up having to paint the walls themselves to cover up their fuckup

Why are the pyramids in Egypt? Because they were too big to transport to England.

Director of The Met was quoted as saying "Clearly those artifacts belonged in a Museum" before directing his security agents to throw the reporters over the side.

The "They'll just sell or destroy them" defense is sort of awful. They aren't necessarily wrong, but they also neglect the fact that they've sold and destroyed a lot of them themselves already.
