You right.

>The United flight comes a day after severe turbulence on a Hawaiian Airlines flight led to dozens of injuries. On Sunday, at least 36 people on Hawaiian Airlines Flight 35 were injured, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, sending 20 people to emergency rooms.

Was going to say, the other flight had a lot more injured IIRC, so this must be a different one. I imagine the mix of already-warm air mixing with really cold incoming air is causing some unpredictable weather. Could be wrong of course, but hopefully this doesn't become a pattern.

Yeah the other one was Honolulu to Canada.

It was PHX to Honolulu...unless there was another one?

Oh maybe? I might have gotten confused because I read it on a Canadian website.

Bro I don’t need to see this when I’m gonna be flying in like three days

Edit: AND when I’m having a layover in Houston.

Risley t1_j0vm3e0 wrote

I’m with you right there brother.

Just focus on one key point:

THE FLIGHT STILL LANDED SAFELY

It might be hell in the sky but the plane ✈️ was built for it. So stay strapped into that seat. You will land safely. Trust the statistics over your emotions.

Range-Shoddy t1_j0vsio9 wrote

I’m an engineer. I math all day. You’re right- statistics over emotions. And I’m still noping at this whole thing 😂 I was once on a flight with an aborted landing, thunderstorm, nothing like these two flights, and I’m still not over it 10 years later.

nooblevelum t1_j0wy3f4 wrote

I was on a flight that had a balked landing and it was scary asf not knowing if we were going to get enough lift or just the fact it happened. Shook me.

BloopityBlue t1_j0xqvl2 wrote

I had that happen once and the not knowing was the worst

3

Range-Shoddy t1_j11yvxx wrote

The worst was a guy in the row behind us worked in ATC and he was like I have no idea that sucked so then 4 rows of people panicked even worse. It was cross winds that blew the plane in front of us sideways so good call but not fun.

1

Diabetesh t1_j0vwnw5 wrote

Something really cool is looking at the stats in graph form you see continuing decline in fatal incidents (in the us at least).

The other thing to keep in mind is nothing is going wrong unless the flight crew is panicking.

Not to be a downer - but built for it yes!

Maintained per OEM standards…. Thats a different story.

As major airlines have shopped out their maintenance to the lowest bidder across the globe.

6

feral_brick t1_j0xnl81 wrote

That's.... Not how airlines work.

Everyone except Russia has very strict maintenance standards that are actually upheld. That's why you get ridiculous shit like "my flight got delayed because someone's tray table wouldn't lock"

_Erindera_ t1_j0vff1o wrote

Just keep your seat belt on and you'll be fine.

Heaven forbid you’re in the bathroom when the plane hits clear air turbulence encountered without warning. Don’t ask me how I know.

Ugh, I'm sorry. :( The other day, I saw a similar article about passenger injuries from turbulence on a flight to Hawaii. The best advice I've heard is to wear a seatbelt even when it's not required. You still might feel some of the turbulence, but you're less likely to get injured. Safe travels!!

22

Risley t1_j0vm9kg wrote

Yea the injuries are from slamming your head into the roof. Can’t happen if you have a seat belt on.

20

Halogen12 t1_j0wasin wrote

During a flight we hit a big spot of turbulence and even with my seatbelt on I still felt like I was levitating out of my seat. Everything rattled so loud it sounded like the plane was being torn apart. I would have loved to see how much we dropped in that first 30 seconds, haha! It was a crazy ride. Keep that seatbelt on at all times!

4

Wes_WM t1_j0xulof wrote

The interesting part is USUALLY you don’t drop much. Turbulence is kind of like riding waves in the ocean. You more feel the plane pitch up and down, but you don’t gain or lose much altitude in most situations

code_archeologist t1_j0vgaau wrote

In three days the weather phenomenon that is causing this extreme and sudden turbulence is likely to have passed.

fetustasteslikechikn t1_j0vhtb0 wrote

Well not to be that person, but Thursday is when the cold snap system is going to be pushing through the area, could be a nasty ride.

amendmentforone t1_j0vn1gt wrote

There's a random severe storm system rushing through the area today. It was 44 degrees this morning and then suddenly we had torrential rain, hail and lightning. Not surprised at the turbulence. This kinda system sucks for planes to try and get around.

What is it about Altimas and their drivers?!!?!? I'm 100% convinced there's a destruction clause in the contract when you buy one.

Section 3, paragraph 2, subgraph bullet point 4 - User must wreck this car into at least 3 solid and 2 moving objects within the first year of ownership or vehicle will be repossessed and sold to another owner who promised to really fuck it up.

Even if they turn the seatbelt light off, it's good advice to stay fastened. You'll be less likely to get injured during turbulence.
