Are they being punished for losing? Or did they do something “immoral” at the World Cup? I remember Sadam Hussein apparently tortured his players when they lost as punishment for embarrassing him.

Edit: “Iranian police briefly detained several unidentified top-tier football players in a raid on a party on New Year's Eve where alcohol was served in violation of an Islamic ban”

For drinking alcohol it says it right in the article. Also most of their national team players play abroad in europe and would be back at their clubs as the European season has resumed.

The article didn't name any players, or whether they played in the World Cup or not. Everyone was released except for one non football player.

Seems like a great way to ensure that talented players want absolutely nothing to do with the sport anymore...

They are being punished because there were women (gender mixing) at this party and alcohol. I think the regime don’t care about the lost match now

Not surprised to be honest with the history of the human rights violations they have a history of.

The only way they will have freedoms is to continue to protest, rise up and remove the existing monsters.

They are already in the midst of a revolution against the regime. This should go over real well with the people.
