Right wing Congress tried to impeach him without a criminal charge. They effectively deposed a popularly elected president they objected to.

They didn't need a criminal charge because Impeachment doesn't require a crime. And they didn't have the votes for the impeachment until he tried the coup and then he was overwhelmingly voted out
