Interesting I've never actually heard of these and here I thought I was relatively well-versed in cryptids. Alot of this does seem to line up which on the one hand brings me a bit of relief knowing that maybe someone has information on these things, but on the other it terrifies me with the thought that more may be out there. The idea of a predator for humanity which can alter it's appearance and mimic voices seems to explain a lot of this, but I can't help but feel it's only part of the puzzle. Do Fleshgaits normally have mind-altering capabilities like that? What really terrifies me is that this thing- whatever it was didn't even have to touch me to discombobulate me like that. It's like me just being near it fucked with my mental faculties to a level I've never felt before. Maybe it was just some result of tremendous fear that made me feel that way, but it just felt so wrong, and that's the only word I can think to describe it with.

Look up 'Panic in the Woods Phenomenon '.
It's been reported since Ancient Greece or even further back.
It goes well beyond normal fear of being hunted. It's the Fear you talked about. Even from experienced hunters and soldiers armed with high-tech, military weapons. Rangers and Green Beret types have talked about sudden, pants-shitting fear just out of the blue, middle of a nice calm day, type situations.
The idea I'm touting is that the Greek God Pan - who Satyrs and even Satan/the Devil's appearance is based on - could have, itself, been based on a Fleshgait.

What if it has something to do with frequency and vibration? The way we see/hear/feel things is rooted in the way the particular thing vibrates, so maybe they’re less shapeshifting and more frequency-shifting creatures . . . Just a thought.
