Is there a possibility that it's a creature that your fanily have made some sort of contract to in the past with exchange of a large comfortable house to live in? What are the possibility that the creature have been stalking your house to collect something that it is due?

Imagine making a loan with the bank, and they send people to collect from your family because you guys have due unpaid payments. Just saying...
