Hold on, if this thing is tough enough to survive reentry and impact with the ground at meteoric speeds, I'd figure it would be effectively bulletproof.

They may have strong spaceships to protect and cushion them. It made an assumption (a couple, actually), and was killed.

From the story it seemed to just crash naked, effectively. No spaceship or anything.
