Imagine waiting for your lung cancer test and getting the first text. And then they say sorry about that last text, we meant to say merry Christmas. But then your test results come back and you actually do have lung cancer.

Yeah, the scary thing is that text was clearly meant for someone. I'd hate to be that someone, for oh so many reasons.

followup text: But actually you do have aggressive lung cancer.

They needn't have sent out a message at all - nobody wants a mass message from their doctor's office or dentist. Spamming people only opens you up to mistakes. They happen more often than you think, only usually it's something more harmless (such as forgetting to change the year).

Can you please send this out as a mass text to everyone who sends out mass texts (and mass emails)?

The sad thing is someone that got that ALSO does actually have lung cancer, probably and will soon get another text saying "actually, also, you did have lung cancer"

I don't imagine that text message is how they would notify someone. Anyone under there care with that diagnosis would certainly know it before receiving the text.

If you look at the message, it's actually meant for another employee.

Yeah, but the guy it's about got it too, probably.

This is crazy to me, where I live they'll only text you a negative result for a test, and only if you've opted in. If you have an actual health concern they need to inform you about, they always call and confirm that its you on the phone. If they can't get ahold of you, they just send a 'call us ASAP' text.

I had an ultrasound earlier this year to see if my remaining ovary had developed cysts that needed surgical intervention. When the voicemail they left me said "call us back and ask for X" instead of "it's clear" I was very concerned. The relatively brief hold I endured was horrible. Turned out that I just had fluid in my abdomen indicating a recently burst cyst, NBD. Around here they apparently don't even give relatively benign results through an impersonal message.
I really feel for the people who got that text.

Yeah, feeling the pain. Asked for prescription painkillers due to staged multiple teeth extraction and received a text inviting me to anonymous addiction meetings at my local surgery. With me actual name on it. Got similar non- apology text next day. Who would have thought that merging 2 surgeries due to staff shortages won't resolve their admin issues? They actually were so much better during plague..

"Wait, that was a mistake. In any event, you should definitely have a much happier holiday season than when you thought you had aggressive lung cancer, right? Right?"
