Been in tech dev for about 30 years. I don't do facebook, twitter. I didn't do myspace. I avoid things like Alexa in my home, 'internet enabled light bulbs', vacuum cleaners with cameras in them.. and I put black electrical tape over any camera in laptops/devices.

People are often surprised by that, they think I'd do the opposite 'because I work in tech'

No. It's because I work in tech that I avoid those things.

There are 2 types of I.T. people, those who embrace IOT and connect anything/everything to the internet, and those who keep a gun beside the printer in case it starts to act weird.

I'd rather see all the dust, legos, and pet fur it's picked up. Let's see everything roomba earning its keep!

This is why I didn't buy a Roomba... what kind of idiot openly invites a remote controlled camera into their home 24/7 ?

Then add to that the fact that Amazon owns the company.

.. wtf does a Roomba need to take pictures for? And why is it connected to the internet?

I'm all for a Robot uprising, but this is just dumb.

it probably uses them for navigation, and sends them to the cloud for some machine learning thing.

Still dumb, but there IS theoretically a reason.

He said he did understand that videos would be taken from inside his home and that they would be tagged. “I felt that the company handled the disclosure of the data collection responsibly,” he wrote in an email, pointing to both the consent agreement and the device’s prominently placed sticker reading “video recording in process.” But, he emphasized, “I’m not an average internet user.”

Buy stupid shit, win stupid prizes. I know that's not how the saying goes but my nail clipper doesn't need internet connectivity! And neither does the washing machine or the fridge or the RC. These things yell spyware so hard it can be heard on the moon. And even when it doesn't, some hacker will take charge of it to spread kiddie porn. Stop buying this shit!

Sounds awful but this is why you gotta read the full TOS or EULA or whatever they called it.

It's not consumers' fault they don't have time to read a novel for every purchase they make. Companies should stop being shitty, and the government should help keep this nonsense from happening

Haha! The government not pissing on consumers and letting companies get away with literally anything, good one!

Wait.. this isn't r/jokes!

While I agree the current system is broken and should be fixed.

Consumers KNOW ITS BROKEN and need to be responsible. Now if they pulled something like Dufy did and straight up violated what they said they were doing and what the TOS said, yup, I'm with you.

But if they only followed what people agreed to, IN A BETA TRIAL, sorry but they should have read it before signing on.

Honestly, I couldn't care less if a fuzzy picture of me on the toilet is shown to a group of developers for learning purposes. And if this picture somehow ends up on the internet, still don't care. It's not like they attach your name to it and it's the first thing that comes up when somebody googles you. The headline makes it sound like the pictures were linked to people's personal Facebook pages.
