Getting some Edward Hopper vibes from this one.

Hard to paint people doing boring things without evoking hopper. But you're definitely right lol

I felt the same thing. The space feeling real but emptier and a little liminal give it that Hopper vibe. You're best yet, great job!

So pretty. Brings back memories of day drinking on the LES

Perfect. That's the goal! Funny enough my reference for this painting was taken at night

Chav t1_je0o04h wrote

At first I just read this as just, "this painting was taken at night" and it still made sense.

nim_opet t1_jdzy0i3 wrote

Which bar in the LES? Also, cool painting!

I used to go there all the time back when it was called Spitzer’s.

I mostly hung out at The Johnsons, 151, and St. Jeromes but I spent my fair share of nights at Spitzer's if I was feeling fancy.

For anyone wondering, the painting is 22"x16 (half sheet). The image is of Pretty Ricky's! I stopped in there after some ramen and thought it would make a nice painting.

For my watercolor nerds: Paper is saunders waterford 140lb rough, paints are daniel smith and winsor and newton.

FrankiePoops t1_je0n4co wrote

Art nerdery aside, let's get to the important questions. Where'd you get ramen?

Painting is dope though.

Izakaya right next door. It was OK. Okiboru is also close and a billion times better.

3

lunacraz t1_je1n28j wrote

ha - is that the one with like the black ramen?

went to Okiboru for the first time the other day - the tsukemen was great! need to try the regular one now

I love this! I don't currently own any professional art, but I'm browsing your site now.

Haha awesome. Let me know if the site is acting up or anything lol

LaxHnl t1_je3tvzs wrote

Thank you, will do! If I’m able to get anything, I’d like to let you know I’ll be adopting a snobbish Trans-Atlantic accent, referring to myself as a “Patron of the Arts,” and pretending I’m from an old money UES family. 😂

onewordpoet OP t1_je4t24k wrote

The world needs more transatlantic art patrons. It aint like it used to be!

2

Saint_Eve t1_je3bt0p wrote

This is so beautiful. How did you learn how to do this? This type of painting is amazing.

3

onewordpoet OP t1_je3dfim wrote

I can definitely answer specifics. But lots of practice, lots of drawing, and lots of plein air painting. Painting from life is probably the most helpful. I also have a degree in illustration so that definitely has helped in terms of crafting a visual narrative.

I love this one.

Makes me really wish they didn't change the south street seaport bench/steps thing by pier 17 cause that setting would've made a gorgeous painting in this style.

2

onewordpoet OP t1_je13ms7 wrote

i plan on going out to the piers a lot this summer. praying for some warmth soon

If you keep the painting low where most of the bar is cut off, it looks like the person on the left is.playing a piano.

2

namedafteracartoon2 t1_je4z83y wrote

Damn that's cool that they let you sit there and paint! How long were you there and it must he tough capturing the people talking because they are constantly moving. Wow, years of practice all right here, this is so cool. I wanna learn how to do this and paint my surroundings

2

onewordpoet OP t1_je4ziwa wrote

I love the praise but I'm gonna be real I took a picture and painted it at home lmao

I do plein air paint though! A bit hard to do that inside a bar with drunk elbows everywhere

2

namedafteracartoon2 t1_je4zstm wrote

Makes sense, I've got plenty of pics I've taken over the many years I could do. What's plain air paint?
