People complaining about this are ridiculous. It would rise to $17.25/hour next year. That's $35,880/year, IF you can get 40 hours per week all year long at a minimum wage job. In NYC, that already precludes you from living alone. That level income requires a roommate even in the shittiest parts of the city. And you're not going to be able to save shit - so good luck moving if you need to pay 1st month and a security deposit.

Don't worry, Starbuck's is already paying this much, so the increase won't be responsible for raising the price of your caramel macchiato. The price might go up anyway, but it won't be because of this.

And why exactly is someone with zero marketable skills entitled to their own apartment in the most expensive borough of the most expensive city in the world?

If you can't afford to pay someone a livable wage, you shouldn't be allowed to own a business.

That's really not an extreme statement.

Edit: To the repliers.

So people should make $0 instead of $15? Which is what happens when their job goes away in your scenario.

This is going to make childcare completely unaffordable to any middle class family.

Talk about timing. I was just complaining about how I’m getting bored of paying $3.75 for a medium coffee in Manhattan. Is there any way I can routinely pay $4.50 for a medium drip coffee and maybe $7 for a latte?

I’ve lately become bothered by what I’m paying for coffee to grind at home. I think it’s around $20 for the small bag of coffee, and that size was recently reduced. I may have to spend time looking for cheaper good coffee.
