It’s still good pizza, even with the price increase. New Yorkers have honestly been spoiled as everyplace else pays way more.

At this point even 2$ a slice is still a great deal.

Used to love $1 pizza. Two places on 14st I used to eat at.

2 slices for $3, seriously that is a great deal nowadays.

There are still plenty of $1 slice spots, especially in mid town.

Yeah 99c still goes hard. Pizza sucks but hey it's the experience that counts. They need to start selling merch for tourists who come visit tho or else idk how they are going to stay afloat.

The biggest benefit of having the cheap pizza cost exactly $1 is/was the convenience factor of not fumbling with having to wait for them to make change and put it away. So they have a task ahead of them to popularize $2 bills before the price goes up to $2.

Wack ass pizza.

I only eat Joes, Johns of Bleecker, Patsys, Lucali, Lucia, Amore, New Park, DiFara, or Umbertos.

I assume these places will stop taking cards (or impose minimums or surcharges) as soon as the pandemic is sufficiently past, since merchant fees are a significant cost at their cheap prices and low margins. I would usually pay that kind of place in cash especially if I am not buying a large order, unless I don’t have the cash at the moment. But I usually carry cash just like before the pandemic. For things like Starbucks, of course they can eat the card fees no problem so I’d even buy a snack or a flavored water with a card from them.

I have seen this headline so many times over the last 2 days and I finally just realized it's about them increasing the price by fifty cents not that it had closed down.

Do you WANT to eat pizza that’s made from ingredients they can charge a dollar for and still have a functioning business model? It’s going to be mostly sawdust and lint.

It’s funny when you have students lamenting the $1.50 for a slice while their going to the New School and NYU. It’s so fun to pretend your not a trustafsrian

4BDN t1_jd35jl2 wrote

Yeah 50 cents isn't a big deal if you like it over other dollar slice places. I used to go to a place near Baruch that had $1.50 slices that were decently better than normal dollar slice places.

Lovat69 t1_jd3jq18 wrote

There are other 99 cent slices though.

I remember when there was a hole in the wall $1 place a block up from Jamaica avenue like 10 years ago. The place was like a stand, you walk up to the window and order, the store itself was like the size of a large bedroom

Still a relatively cheap pizza. And it’s still good quality. The best cheap pizza in town. The other places in Manhattan are tourist traps.

And we're going to see the same headline about those, too. Again, and again, and again...

Going off of headlines, I would've thought the $1 was done years ago.

pensezbien t1_jd3tsv8 wrote

They’re still made and still legal, though because the demand isn’t that high they don’t make a huge quantity. You can get some from your bank upon request, though if they don’t have any on hand you may need to wait for them to get some on your behalf. The main thing needed for $2 bills is popularizing them.

$1 and $2 coins would also be a good idea, honestly, entirely replacing the corresponding bills, like Canada and the eurozone have done, and also eliminating physical pennies like Canada and certain euro countries. But those are harder fights. ($1 coins do already exist, in small quantities, alongside the $1 bill.)

Fortunately, there are still a number of dollar slice shops in Manhattan.

The 99c Delicious Pizza shops on 7th Ave are still a buck, for example. Also a good spot on 31st and of course 99c Fresh Pizza on 40th.

These places work on volume, so I am committed to eating at least $8 worth of pizza every other day in rotation at the various dollar slice shops still left along with tipping generously.

I am willing to do this to help the cause of keeping the remaining dollar slices true for you, the people.

Ate $3 worth of slices already today. Will be heading out in a few hours for rounds 2 and 3.

im_not_bovvered t1_jd4m83g wrote

There's a pizza place across from my office on 35th that has slices for $.99 and two slices and a soda for 3. These type of places haven't gone extinct.

Man... 2bros and all the lookalike pop-ups... One of the most obnoxious food trends to hit the city in the mid 00s. Hopefully this never returns.

Pizza was never meant to be a dollar. You went to a place cause the slices were good. Most neighborhoods lost all quality slice joints due to this cancerous business model, akin to the McDonald's of pizza. Def not rest in peace. Good riddance.

chargeorge t1_jd5ntv1 wrote

They blew up in the 2008 crash when when they could get super cheap rent in high visibility areas. I remember in 2009 when a couple stores across the street in Manhattan got into a price war, I think they got down to like 79c a slice before they declare a truce.

ShadownetZero t1_jd7h5ab wrote

So $1.50 is the new defacto trash slice that no New Yorker with dignity eats. Good to know.

1

ShadownetZero t1_jd7hr35 wrote

Exactly. Actual pizza places are barely getting by with $3-$4 slices, and you think these K-Mart clearance $1 pizzas have found some amazing secret to their prices?

They were selling you greasy pizza-flavored cardboard and convinced you that you were getting a good deal. No self-respecting New Yorker would pay $1 for that garbage.

midtownguy70 t1_jdbrblo wrote

Its just volume. Constant line of people. The slices don't even get a chance to cool down enough to need reheating before the pie is gone and the next comes out. No they are not using mozzarella made in-house from milk that's hand squeezed out of a cows tit in the backyard... but plenty of the dollar joints are fine for what they are.
