Submitted by snookerduck t3_yipl7c in nyc

It's me. I'm the idiot tourist.

I've just arrived in NYC from the UK for my honeymoon (woo!) and have started the week brilliantly... I've left my passport in the back of a yellow cab on the way to the hotel. I blame post-wedding exhaustion and jet lag! But yes, I am an idiot...

Thankfully I have a photo of the cab's medallion number. We've tried 311 but they're closed until tomorrow - I will ring tomorrow first thing, but I've submitted an online form for lost property in the meantime. We have also tried to find the cab's garage but the 311 website can't find it. We've got details of how to apply for emergency travel paperwork and will do this tomorrow if 311 are no help.

I'm not sure what else to do in this situation. Is there anything else you guys think I should do or any helpful tips about how to recover lost property?

Thank you so much!

UPDATE: the cab driver just came back to the hotel with my passport and it's safely back in my possession! Thank you to the anonymous passenger who found it and handed it over, and thank you to the absolute legend who drove his cab all the way back to get it back to me!!! Faith in humanity is restored. Thank you to you all as well for the brilliant suggestions and tips - I'll be well prepared for when this inevitably happens again :D

Worst comes to worst go to the British consulate and ask for an emergency passport. But you’ll have to apply for a new regular passport when you get home, emergency passports expire after a shorter amount of time than normal ones

Ask for help at your hotel reception desk. They have numbers for you to reach. Problem is the taxi driver won't check the backseat every time someone exits the taxi. So the next passenger might have taken it. Unless they handed it to the driver. You might have to go to the embassy tomorrow to get an emergency one to get you home

I’ll have to agree, it’s easier to challenge fees with Ubers, cabs on the other hand can take whatever route tolls and all, and charge you a shit tonne and you have to challenge in person. And no one has time for that.

Musician Bela Fleck left master tapes in a cab. You’re not the first nor the last to make this mistake. The masters were returned unharmed. Good luck!
