I gotta be honest Alt 92.3 has been trash. There’s nothing alt about it. It’s basically 90s rock and emo non stop. RHCP AND MCR in full rotation. That’s fine and I enjoy it but please why can’t NY get a NEW ALT ROCK radio station. Put Blink182 and Blur on 101.1 oldies already.

I hope we finally get a proper new rock station like 104.5 in Philly or even 107.1 out of Westchester county.

Damn. I still miss when it was k rock, but it was nice to have a rock station in the area whenever I was in a car.

Funny I was wondering if 1010 Wins still existed and I guess it does. Figured in the day if Google maps and weather apps it would have died off but seems expansion it is!

I listen to WFAN, WINS and sports games on the radio. And even though those stations are also broadcasted on FM I just gotta have that AM static. I can't explain it. To me it just "sounds" better on the AM radio. Maybe it's the nostalgia of my dad driving.

wow.. poor 92.3. It can't stay music.

The number of times I've seen that change then come back to be "rock/alternative" ....

We need something on modern equivalent with 104.3 before it turned classic (q104.3).

It’s already been simulcasted on one of the HD2 channels (forget which one) and it sounds weird hearing it in full digital clarity.

I'm so angry about the death of radio, and free, streaming broadcast music. They are phasing out AM radio, which I also like to listen to in a car for traffic and news purposes.

K-Rock pretty much changed my childhood and I miss it dearly. I won tickets to a Jimmy Eat World/Taking Back Sunday concert in 2005, I went to Clausfest 04 and 05 AND I had the distinction of making Jake & Jackie laugh bc I called in and asked if David Lee Roth eats with his ass (I was 12 and just saw that episode on south park)

Few years later, it became Jack and that’s around the time I stopped listening to the radio

The radio in my mom's kitchen has been playing 1010 WINS on a low volume around the clock for the past forty years or longer. The only interruptions have been blackouts and power outages. It's either "for the cat" or "so the robbers will think someone is home."

There’s a bit more to this. First, WINS is the top commercial billing station in New York, with north of $30 million the past few years.

The other, not as good, part is that Audacy is combining the newsrooms do WINS and WCBS-AM, so that there will be almost no difference between the two. Even though they’ve been owned by the same company for years, they had distinct voices and styles.

NYC Radio has been on the down since the 1990's. WPLJ, WNEW, WXRK, all rock legendary stations are gone. No music on AM since the 1980's, Since I pay for S/XM streaming and use Waze for traffic, I really have no use for radio anymore.

That’s sad. I listen almost exclusively to 92.3. They started as NOW. Then they went to “alt” but played horrible mgk and commercial bull shit. But the last few months they actually started playing 90s and 2000s alternative music that I grew up with. I loved it.

I don’t have the hd channels so I guess there goes my favorite radio station. For 1010 wins are you kidding

When I was about 6 or 7 years old, my grandfather gave my sister and I transistor radios. Ran off one 9 volt battery. Fast forward 26 years (grandpa has long since passed) Hurricane Sandy comes along and knocks out the power. Wife, myself and our dog were without power for over 2 weeks. Wife and I would come home from work, light the fireplace and I'd break out that same transistor radio and listen to 1010 WINS and then change over to WFAN for Steve Somers (the schmooze) at 7 pm and just chill on the couch with our dog curled up with us. The sound of the static on that AM transistor radio was very soothing. I still have and use that radio when I go camping.

I’ve listened to 1010 WINS for years (it’s on right now, in fact). I remember when they had the teletype sound in the background and original intro.

Here’s the kicker—I live in Texas and have never lived in NYC.

Mainstream radio in nyc is super sad. Thankfully wfmu, wnyu, wfdu, wsou, wkcr all make up for it most of it the time. Actually wnyu has been really impressing me lately with their new music afternoons. I just can't always get the signal because wfdu seems to have a stronger signal.

May I ask why you listen to WINS? They may claim to "give you the world" but it's really like 90% tristate area news and traffic/weather and maybe 10% other domestic/international headlines

Mr-Macphisto t1_is60q5j wrote

I think I stumbled across them years ago when I was up late one night assembling some furniture in my office and enjoyed the background noise of the news. I prefer their coverage of national news over my local news radio, unless it’s about severe weather coverage (which is a regular occurrence here in DFW). One of our local news stations is extremely conservative, so I don’t care to listen to it. I also appreciate hearing about local NYC matters.

I also appreciate it because it makes me feel a tiny bit connected to the city I love. NYC has literally been my favorite place to be since the 90s. I’ve been a few times over the last year and am planning our next visit soon.
