I didn’t see this coming. Thought it was a good location but I’ve been there a few times and there’s definitely something lacking. Maybe the way it’s laid out? I’m closer to the Queens location than Red Hook but I definitely go to the Red Hook location way more.

Since you mentioned it, the way the store is laid out is absolutely terrible. It's completely random, impossible to find what you want. I genuinely enjoy visiting IKEA but I never had good experience with this particular store.

Read in an article the brilliance of the IKEA floor plan to twist and turn rather than straight lines, like in most department stores. This encourages people to see and spend more. Proud I went in for only one thing after reading that article and stuck to the plan.

This would never have happened if they had a cafeteria. What's the point of going to a physical IKEA if you can't get some damn meatballs?

OhGoodOhMan t1_itw4ar7 wrote

They have a cafeteria, although it's a fast casual concept where you order off a kiosk and wait for your number to be called. And they have meatballs.

nimbyist t1_itw44up wrote

They do have a cafeteria/meatballs there…

I went to the Red Hook IKEA for the first time this weekend and was shocked at how big the cafeteria was and how busy it was. Definitely seems like part of the draw.

Funi0nz t1_itwf0r3 wrote

Yeah this wasn’t going to work. Not when the one in Red Hook is so much better. They have nothing there but small items. That and the area is pretty congested.

whodattguy t1_itx7g3q wrote

They should open one up in Westchester or Rockland. My options are the store in ct or Brooklyn. Both over an hour away.

27

Tobar_the_Gypsy t1_itxbcc3 wrote

There’s on in Paramus which is much closer to Rockland than either of those

whodattguy t1_itxlhxp wrote

I didn’t realize how close that one is. I just hate crossing the GW though. Thanks. I’ll give this one a shot next time.

charliehustles t1_itxdxh9 wrote

Westchester seriously needs one. There was going to be one in New Ro like 20 years ago and a bunch of people threw a shit fit and IKEA was like fuck that. Never bothered with Westchester again.

I go to Hicksville. A bit of a ride but it’s nice there.

However much I like Wawa sandwiches, I could drive to Westchester for free a little bit easier than Redhook, NJ is a hefty return toll and insane roads.

New Rochelle would have been an amazing location.

My coworker went there and liked something, i think a small night stand. Not in stock. Can't order it for shipping from the store or else they charge more. They had it shipped from somewhere else, it took a few weeks to get there, and they would only hold it for like 24 hours. She had to take the subway back over there just to pick it up on a day off (we have an office nearby, i would have drove her any other day). It was really inconvenient

NarwalsRule t1_itx8ca5 wrote

I tried buying some chairs here but everything I wanted was out of stock. And the cafeteria was closed for a long time due to Covid. Heavy congestion in the area doesn't help. People with cars just drive further east or Red Hook.

FarFromSane_ t1_itxgduz wrote

Gonna miss it though. Very easy to get to via subway.

doubledipinyou t1_ity99hz wrote

There's a parking lot with loading. I think sales must been bad tbh. The crowd isn't buying too much when you have marshals, Burlington, and tj max in the same mall.

8

Cokrates t1_iu819hs wrote

The problem is this location doesn't sell any furniture, you can go in and view it and you have to pay and have the order delivered direct to your home. It takes away so much of what Ikea is, which is seeing a $30 dollar table and buying it on the spot.

When you have to pay a manditory $60 delivery fee, you aren't going to purchase something spontaneously.

Dr_Pepper_spray t1_itwh89s wrote

This place was garbage. It was small and oddly unorganized. I know it was supposed to be a paired down version of an IKEA, but it was a painful after-thought.

27

SBAPERSON t1_itx9hc3 wrote

Even Ikea workers in Hicksville didn't consider this a real ikea

Few-Artichoke-2531 t1_itx8y0m wrote

I won't miss it. This location never has anything I want in stock. The one time I went I think I had to pay for parking. I just go out to the one in Long Island.

Cos you couldn’t even get furniture there. I also heard that they got hit by the flooding pretty bad last year.

TheAngelPeterGabriel t1_itxgqgk wrote

I went here thinking it was gonna be a big Ikea and was sorely disappointed but I also didn't want to travel an hour out to the one in Brooklyn at that point. Idk why they do these small stores. I go to big department stores to go to big department stores

Hopeful-Pollution t1_ity1683 wrote

As someone who lives in the area and stopped by often this store had a definite lack of foot traffic compared to the one in Brooklyn. It was never packed like other stores in the area. The fact that a lot of items were not in stock and had to either be ordered online or purchased from the Red Hook store certainly didn't help. Also the fact that the store is in a basement and got extensively flooded from Irene just after they opened requiring closures and extensive renovations also was bad luck. A shame because the Red Hook location is a pain in the ass to get to from Queens if you don't have a car.

I lived a couple blocks away from it just a few months ago. Most of the time I would go for food, but I got tired of the small menu. If they doubled down on the cafe, they might have been able to stay open… as a restaurant.

AirlineFlyer t1_itxt6nq wrote

The one time I went to that location it was pretty empty. The little cafe had 4 of 6 ordering kiosks down and most items were sold out and what was left was truly awful. Back to Redhook for the real deal.

meantnothingatall t1_ityyt09 wrote

The store was terrible. Hardly anything there. Couldn't order things to the location, though randomly certain things you could. The layout was awful. And the last time I was there, all I could notice was the HORRIBLE smell in there --- I mean, really bad. And it had smelled the time I was there before and nothing had been remedied.

I going to miss this store. I surprised it was only opened for two years. It seems it was opened longer than that. Going to the Brooklyn one is such a hassle sometimes. Waiting for the B61/B57 can be annoying many times and they stopped running the free shuttle bus years ago.

Honestly, good riddance. I’ll never forget how disappointed my roommate and I were when we discovered just how little this location stocked. We had just moved to a new apartment in Bushwick and went looking for some basics: a curtain rod, curtains, some wall shelves, dish-ware, a frying pan, and order a Strandmon chair for delivery. NONE of these things were in stock. It was maddening, ended up having to visit a few different TJ Maxx and HomeGood Store (shout out to Atlas Mall for having both of these and a 5 Below to boot). Since it was the store closest to us, the site defaulted to that store even we shopped online and we constantly had to deal with items that were out of stock. Interesting concept that Target seems to do well but it failed here.

Ain't no way I'm trying to go across the boroughs to get to an IKEA though

ZweitenMal t1_itzntkq wrote

I think they're closing all the mini-IKEAs. I don't think the Midtown one ever reopened from COVID--it sort of made sense only as a one-room kitchen design showroom, except that they don't really have order fulfillment and delivery down, so you could design your kitchen there but you still have to make several trips to Brooklyn and wait for things to come back in stock to buy the various parts.
