I’ve noticed that not only does New York have high property tax ( like Texas high ) but also a state income tax? Is there a budget sheet that explains where the money goes.

I figured it would mostly go to NYC but each time I visit for work or seeing relatives in upstate New York, it seem like things are just deteriorating.

If I was going to visit for 3 days 2 nights in February. Where would be the safest places outside to sleep?

1

lickedTators t1_ius426n wrote

February is usually too chilly to sleep outside properly.

If you have proper equipment (sleeping bag) then you can go to one of the well known tourist parks (even Union Square) and tuck yourself into a corner by the trees. Cops usually don't give a shit about enforcing vagrancy laws, but they do check the popular parks just barely enough to prevent the permanent unhoused people from staking their claim to a spot. 2 nights is low enough risk that you won't have any problems. Avoid the big parks like Riverside or Central. They have their own enforcement and/or the good sleeping spots are definitely claimed.

If you don't have cold weather gear, you can try to find a subway grate that vents the hot air up. Usually these are already claimed. You may be able to sneak two nights in if you go to the richer parts of the city (UES, UWS) where outreach organizations are more active and might have convinced some of the usual campers to spend time in a shelter.

I don't know enough about BK or Queens to give advice for them. BX and SI just seem like bad places to sleep in in general.

But I'd encourage you to first try to be a hobosexual. This city is great for that because we're idiots and we bring a lot of people home for one night stands. There's also a lot of tourists who're looking for an exciting NYC experience. First night in NY I spent in a stranger's hotel room, and that was just as late night drinking buddies.

1

lickedTators t1_iusorz9 wrote

There'll be late night hotel rooms open almost anywhere. Prices are usually best at night too because they're trying to fill empty rooms.

So I recommend trying your best to go home with someone first, then hotel as a backup. Or make friends with young tourists and sleep on their hotel room floor.

just a rant, no need to respond.
https://northbrooklynnews.files.wordpress.com/2021/12/curbside-composting-002.jpg
so last month all the queens coops i live around got those
brown compost bins for people to deposit their kitchen scraps.
so i bought my own 1gal bin and special 1gal green cornmeal bags
as my cooking generates about 1gal of produce scraps each week.
today my bin is full, i tie up the baggie and then go for the city bin.
they are all gone, not a single building has them out anymore.
my guess is private coops don't want to have to deal with them.
i finally found one in front of a laundromat 6 long blocks away
and it was half full of paper waste.
i'm so depressed nobody bothers to participate in this program.
it's typical greenwashing how the city wastes money on poorly
executed programs to score political points and nothing improves.
i filed a complaint with 311 parks department to suggest they put
these brown bins in the parks somewhere people in surrounding
buildings can then bring their scraps to. parks already deal with
leaf litter waste separately, so compost should not be a stretch.
this anecdote only goes to show you that people will not save the
planet unless they are paid(savings) or legally compelled to do so.

Brooklyn mirage/ Avant Gardner -- anybody know what's up with this or if I can file a complaint? The only way to get water in this venue is to buy a $6 bottle. Security makes you throw away your empty water bottle and tells you there are no longer any water fountains in the venue. If you go up to the bar and ask for tap they say they only sell bottled water. I believe water should be a basic human right. Seems insane to me that a venue is allowed to do this.

Asking on behalf of a family member:
She signed marriage papers with a man who she was in loved with in April 2020. She recently found out he only married her for a green card. Under the instruction of his immigration lawyer, she was forced to sign a series of paperwork by his lawyers that allowed him to receive his conditional green card. He has been avoiding her for the past 4 months after he received his green card.
They never lived together at all. They do not share any joint accounts (bank, phone, etc.) She married him out of love and has always lived at home with her parents.
What type of lawyers should she be involved with to:

  • get this marriage annulled and,
  • file a fraud case with immigration?

Your candidate(s) could use the vote, and you may never know the impact it can have if you stop by to vote in person! Hopefully the state/city/your neighborhood could prosper under good leadership for years to come.

This might be the wrong place to ask this, and excuse my ignorance, but I moved to the city a couple months ago and have to take the 2:40am Amtrak out of Penn Station every once in awhile. I live in Hell’s Kitchen and usually try to walk everywhere.

Long story short, is there a… safest avenue to walk down to get to 34th around that time of night? 10th is a bit too no-man’s-land, 9th is decent then dead after port authority, 8th is the straightest shot and usually more active - but usually active with questionable stuff.

I’m a dude in his late 20s but look pretty young and have gotten heckled at a few times. Not trying to be alarmist and it seems mostly fine - just keep walking and ignore everyone. I suppose I could take the subway down but it’s slightly out of the way and walking is about the same.

hi guys, so i booked a dentist from zocdoc last month and made sure that they were in-network with my dental insurrance. I then received a text / call telling me to book with them directly and they cancelled my appointment via zocdoc. same address and all so I figured it's fine.

I rocked up and signed my forms, I asked them if my insurance covered everything, they verbally told me there was nothing to worry about. I got my cleaning and 1 cavity done, they told me everything will be covered so I walked out without paying any cost.

now a month later i see that they've made a claim via Aetna and they turned out to be out of network and want me to pay 50% of the total cost. which is half a thousand dollars. what do I do now?

Thanks fellow New Yorker for releasing the demon!

I walked around the corner in my building, keeping right and apparently walked too close to a gentleman (but made no contact) who I actually did not see because I was focused on getting to my job site. He remarked, "You really going to walk there when you have all that space," as I walked by. I didn't even realize he was addressing me until I was halfway out of the lobby.

Anyway! He followed me out apparently and bravely and valiantly shoved me from behind while rhetorically asking me, "you really needed to walk there when you had all that space?"

I was surprised and shocked so didn't really respond other than to also say, "really?" to him shoving me.

Anyway, now I'm very angry.

Hi guys, just recently moved to NYC, and I am not entirely sure how the broker fee in NYC works, looking for some help here!
Found an apartment on StreetEasy, during showing Landlord's broker asked for a broker fee amounting to 15% of the rent
We agreed to this over the email
After my application is approved, the broker made a mistake and only asked for an amount that is equivalent to the first month's rent
He also asked for this over the email, so the latest email shows him asking for the broker fee equivalent to the first month's rent only. I paid and moved in
3 weeks after moving in, he realised the mistake he asked for the balance (equivalent of 15% of annual rent - first month's rent equivalent)
Am I obligated to pay or is he SOL?

I love this city

So I’m a Singaporean on a semester exchange in Toronto. I recently visited New York and I must say that I’m in love with your city.

It has always been my dream to visit NYC ever since I was a kid because of the movies, spider-man, Casey Neistat, and my mom who used to work there. The city is so beautiful and it’s the most sophisticated-looking city I’ve ever seen. My visit to the city was everything I expected and more. Also, NYC was much cleaner than I expected. Dare I say even cleaner than Toronto.

Only minor complaint I have is the difficulty in finding public restrooms. However, there definitely are workarounds 😂.

All in all, I will definitely be back!

Can I withhold rent from my landlord?

My roommates and I have been getting screwed by our landlord. We paid extra to have a dishwasher and a nice bedframe left behind, and we’ve had neither for the 4 months we’ve lived here.

Our “house leader” straight up lied to us and told us that our dishwasher would be here in a week. This was said in August. I talked to the technician in the building and he said he gave them an expensive quote 2 weeks prior bcuz it needed a new motherboard. Building clearly didnt want to pay it and has yet to get us a functioning dishwasher (its been 4 months).

They promised to leave behind a nice bedframe as part of the deal and ended up taking it. They said theyd bring it back in “3 days”. Its yet again been 4 months (and we contact them every other week).

Heres the kicker: 2 weeks ago we needed a new mail key, and we have yet to receive one. We need to get into our mailbox and just like the dishwasher and bedrame, they are ghosting us. Everytime we reach out they either say its on the way or “weve put out the request to the ____”.

So can we withhold rent until everything is fixed? Or atleast the urgent stuff like mailbox
