So with New York’s great new wage transparency law, just sharing my biggest tip dealing with wage ranges for hourly jobs.

I run a hourly job platform based in New York called Workwise and from my experience with hourly jobs you should assume that the minimum range is what you will be offered, especially if it’s close to minimum wage.

Seeing a lot of jobs post ranges saying they will pay $15 to $25, and the vast vast majority of the time they will pay $15. Even if you meet all the criteria they may pay $1 or $2 more and then say something along the lines of “will evaluate in 6 or 12 months….” Regardless, always assume the low end of the wage, even with this transparency.

I’ve dealt with a lot of sketchy employers who I’ll reject because the wage is too low, and they claim that the range is like $15 to $20 (our minimum is $17), but when people apply 9 out of 10 times they are offered $15.

The best listings for hourly jobs tend to be one of the following, in this order:

  • Roles that offer an exact salary (confident about their salary)
  • Roles where the range is less than 15% of the minimum (like $17 to $19)
  • Roles that don’t have $15 as the lowest tier of the range

So take everything with a grain of salt!!

My favorite quote from a business was a guy that wanted to post “up to $17 per hour” on a job listing.

When i said that the minimum was $17 he said, “well we’re going to pay $15 for the first 12 to 15 months, and if the employee does well will bump that up to $17 afterwards”

I responded with “so your paying minimum wage and its going to take at least a year before you can even earn what you initially claim when you offer the job…”

He didn’t reply to the email after that.

What i hate the most is that these are the employers that trap those that really need a job and the money by misleading people in their advertisements.

Because of course there's a loop hole for the ruling class to exploit.

I work for a relatively large Hospital and was instructed that we need to make good faith efforts to post accurate salary ranges because we can, and will be audited. So if they are constantly posting $15 to $25 and everyone is hired at or close to $15, this would fail that. If we try to hire outside of our projected range, we need to leave a paper trail justifying why for auditing purposes. The law is new and I am sure there will be some adjusting but this is my current info.

Yeah, totally agree! I really think this is great for New York regardless. I just wanted to shine some light on Hourly work because a lot of attention being shown to big companies like Citi and Deloitte posting outrageous salary ranges that are so spread out, but this law is actually the most helpful for workers who are underserved and taken advantage of! There should be just as much coverage when a company says a job pays $100k to $200k and people are like “how is this helpful” to when a business pays an hourly worker between $15 to $30/hr!

Geico, you can save up to 15 percent or more on your car insurance!

So in other words it could be anything, you just said a random number that has zero commitment behind it
