Skip the Cloisters. Go to the Met.

This isn't even a choice. Met 5th ave is the actual Met. Thats what you want. Save cloisters for another time, even then it wouldn't be the next museum in line though.

The Met is where you want to go, especially in January. The Cloisters are absolutely gorgeous, but much smaller and niche. The real treat is getting to enjoy the gardens, park, Billings arcade and the view which would be kind of harsh the time you’re visiting. You will get so much more diverse art in quantity and hours out of the MET.

Definitely 5th Avenue, the Cloisters is just medieval Christian art and nothing else.
