Apparently there's bedbugs and cockroaches there too according to their staff. I was working outside there Friday and there's Starbucks workers protesting outside because the majority of the people that work there voted to unionize but Starbucks refuses to come to the table and collectively bargain with them. I get coffee from Starbucks here and there but now that they're not recognizing the will of their workers aside from the gross conditions will definitely keep me out of any of their locations.

I would think there are roaches at most restaurants in NYC. I also see workers violating health regulations a lot of times.

Not if they clean every night and have an exterminator in regularly. It's hard but you have to be diligent.

It is amount of diligent that you won’t get from most employees. Most restaurants I seen don’t have a venom proof area to store their trash before it is picked either.

It's the job of Starbucks management to ensure that it happens. There are solutions, including paying people enough to deal with it.

Fun fact: most large-scale preground coffee you buy in grocery stores has cockroach bits in it. People who are allergic to cockroaches can't drink it.

(not saying this is happening at the roastery-- they like most coffee shops these days grind on-site)

Refrigeration guy here, ice machines are always terrible. Sometimes they don’t want to shut them down to clean them, sometimes they don’t know how to clean them, sometimes they don’t know that they need to be cleaned, but 90 percent of the time these things look like they were pulled from a garbage dump, doesn’t matter if it is a supermarket, restaurant, cafe or wherever.

What are they actually striking for? The article said they were striking for a contract + cleaning up the kitchen. It’s not even clear to me why keeping the kitchen sanitary would be an issue for management.

Cleaning supplies cost money, costs money to pay people to clean it, management doesn’t want to pay for that.

I worked for a multinational table service restaurant chain when I lived in Florida. I don't want to name them. One time our last broom broke and our cheap ass GM refused to buy a new one. That asshole made us use our hands to "sweep the floor". We couldn't use gloves either because those also cost money. Super glad I don't work for that company or live in that shit hole state anymore.

The distinction is that most chains are franchises whereas Starbucks is 100% corporate. Seems like a repetitional risk to the company for their flagship to be associated with black mold and bugs.

I hate to say it, but like 8 out of 10 ice machines have mold. It's just something you kind of accept after working in restaurants for a while.

I haven't worked in a kitchen for many years but this sounds right. Super damp environment with the door being constantly opened and closed. Would think that freezing temps would kill mold though?

If you don't believe ice machines get moldy take a look inside almost any machine in a white collar office kitchen. I never saw ours cleaned once in years until enough people noticed hmm that brown sludge on the walls doesn't look quite right lol. I think businesses and office have a habit of buying equipment and either assuming it'll magically maintain itself or never bother to setup proper maintenance

Employee turnover is one of the biggest factors imo how things get forgotten. Person who bought the ice machine probably trained the staff at that exact time it was installed. Lower level staff comes and goes nonstop so the people who would do cleaning and got the training are all gone instantly. Manager or whoever who bought it leaves eventually and never trains anyone about it or leaves instructions. There you go - instantly no one has any idea it has to be cleaned, or by who, or how.

Oh absolutely, our office saw the same thing happen to these ipad knockoff terminals they installed on every conference room to book the rooms. They worked fine for a while and clearly we had staff who knew their functioning, then one by one after a while they'd go wonky, offline, or into a state where you could access the admin panel and mess with the Windows Embedded operating system. The original office designers and staff present when we moved in were all gone so no one had any idea who even to call to fix them lol

Not surprising since this can happen at any food place. I worked in restaurants for a long time, and all ice machines develop mold if not powered down and completely scrubbed once a week.
