I know, this is a longshot, but a friend of mine lost their laptop (in a green case) on the Q train (Brooklyn-bound, around 1:30PM 11/15/22) and was wondering if anyone had any advice on working with MTA to find a lost item or with lost item's insurance claims (i.e. needing an MTA/police report regarding it being lost).

more than likely, it's gone. she's going to need to get a new laptop. i don't think insurance will typically cover a "lost" item (tried that with my insulin pump, with no luck)

If the laptop is password protected what can anyone do with it?

I imagine if it’s a Mac laptop, it would be difficult to reset. If it’s anything like the iPhone, then it will be pretty much impossible to get in without a password.

on a mac ? You just need to reboot into recovery mode and wipe the drives then reinstall the OS. There is nothing stopping you.

A firmware password would stop you.

Source: I set a firmware password.

Edit: Most people don't do this.
