Is it worth going to over one of the hundreds of illegal smoke shops that sell? Feel like the amount of time it takes and the sales tax isn’t worth it

Depends what you usually buy and from where. If it's bud ymmv you can see for yourself and compare, for vapes or edibles knowing they're not fake with bullshit measurements in Aliexpress wrappers or some darkweb distillate is worth not buying off the street.
