Agree, there’s 4 other boroughs in the city, and yes, you could consider New Jersey, or even Long Island/Hudson Valley if you’d want space + not too confined in city life. It did help to have the money, but if you’re budget savvy, it’s of no worry.

Maybe Staten Island could be the most “affordable” place to live in the city if you’d want space & be a homeowner, but >6 million other people in the city live outside of Manhattan, some thriving, and other getting by. It’s possible after all, will be next year beyond.

PS: For a lot of people, helps if you’re a DINK: no kids/obligations (or even pets), you won’t be too saddled by toning it down in life.

There are plenty of people who have a child with an income far lower than $260K in New York City. The cost of living is shit but plenty do it.

Solution: Don't have a child. This isn't rocket surgery. Enjoy that sweet DINK life.

True, how can you make it in this city with $180K coming in each year after taxes?

Honestly if you struggling with 260k, majority of folks in NYC would like a word

Yeah. The cost of living - particular rent - here is insane. It’s why my number one priority in every city election is “what candidate will approve the largest number of new apartments.”

The suburbs are calling. Our household income is north of that and we live well within our means but I constantly feel like we’re broke. The system is designed for you to feel stagnant.

The suburbs also call because your downstairs neighbor won’t want to hear that stomping pitter patter of little feet all day. When your young live by the bars and restaurants, when you have kids you’ll want to be closer to the park. Circle of life.

Try your luck with affordable housing. Should cut your rent.

People say the same thing you have just stated at every income level and every city. Speaking from experience as a parent of 3 there is hardly any parent who thinks they are set financially to start having kids. Parental responsibility will make you question your priorities and that’s ok. Lots of people raise great humans with much less financially.
