Probably monk parakeets - there are flocks all over Queens (we have a resident flock in Astoria)

Thanks, I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for over 25 years and never seen them.

Those are monk parrots. They escaped from shipments from South America from JFK in the 60s

Is it high elevation? They are from three mountains of Argentina so they seek out the highest places they can.

No it’s not, very flat actually. I’m in the border of Queens and Nassau county. She noticed them in the trees once all the leaves had fallen. They stood out bc of the bright green colors.

They're very likely Monk Parrots. They're incredibly evasive, you won't see them on the ground much but you'll definitely hear them because they squawk. ALOT.
THey're also pretty smart, they build nests in warm places, which usually happens to be Con Ed transformers on top of utility poles, which sucks when Con Ed has to service them and destroy the nests, even against the protests of the neighborhood.

She saw them around the beginning of December after all the leaves had fallen. She noticed them bc they were bright green so they really stood out. I saw about 15 of them just randomly on the grass in front of somebody’s house on Saturday. Thinking of putting out a bird feeder maybe 🤔.

Parrots. I've seen them down by Coney Island/Bensonhurst too.

The population must be increasing bc in all the years I’ve been taking my kid to the park, walking my dog and jogging around the neighborhood I’ve never seen them. I see the usual native birds but these really stand out bc of the bright green color.
