We just got one in Astoria/Sunnyside and it's great.

I don't get why they say it's their Long Island City location.

le_suck t1_j4n7763 wrote

everything on that strip of northern Blvd calls itself long island city. I don't know who's wrong, but it seems like one side of the street is Sunnyside, one side is Astoria, and the road itself is woodside.

ooouroboros t1_j4nnb9w wrote

I believe Astoria is also technically part of "long Island City'

I think it has something to do to how mail was delivered in queens before it became part of NYC. Flushing is another one that it both a 'town' and a large area encompassing other towns (like I think jamaica).

12

fe2sio4 t1_j4nu96h wrote

I think zip codes starts with 113 have mails come from one central flushing location. So bayside, fresh meadows, and others

6

lemongrassgogulope t1_j4ovs49 wrote

I lived in the area for a bit. My neighborhood is was Astoria for all intents and purposes but the official address was LIC for some reason

3

txdline t1_j4n6ylc wrote

Because the address is Long Island City, https://www.unitedstateszipcodes.org/11101/

14

koreamax t1_j4n7cgh wrote

It is, but Jackson Heights address is Flushing. Queens addresses are wonky and the H mart is definitely not in Lic

16

Astoria321 t1_j4pzsqn wrote

Queens used to be LIC Elmhurst and Flushing before being a borough

umpalumpaklovn t1_j4nqe3f wrote

Because even 36th street is officially Long Island City on your mail address

I’ve used the Hicksville, Great Neck and East Williston Branches. Hicksville has the best parking; it’s right off the NSP and LIE which run parallel at that juncture. In the Hicksville location they took over a Waldbaums super center; in Williston Park, they took over where a Grand Union used to be and parking is good; it is a strip mall. I think Hicksville is the largest and parking is good as it is the anchor store there.

Can we get one in Brooklyn? HMart is the biggest thing I miss about the UWS.

26

max1001 t1_j4nlflh wrote

Wouldn't do well in Brooklyn. Already too many Asian supermarket and probably cheaper than H-mart.

2

notqualitystreet t1_j4ntmkd wrote

Do I expect a Korean supermarket in Crown Heights? No, but I’d appreciate one. Heck they can’t even get a Trader Joe’s.

11

CultofCedar t1_j4mi9l3 wrote

I go to Japan village in sunset which is neat but Hmarts got it all. Multiple on Brooklyn please.

neehaha t1_j4nqtk4 wrote

Hmart is great in neighborhood with no other options but they’re expensive.

12

High_Violet92 t1_j4qdhcx wrote

This! Nothing against it per say, but H Mart is like the Walmart of Korean Groceries without the cheaper prices

3

neehaha t1_j4qe4em wrote

Yeah it becomes very obvious when you go to Flushing and notice that Hmart charges 30% (guesstimate) higher

2

Eniretsim t1_j4nfd37 wrote

Does anyone know why the two h-marts in manhattan are not listed in their locations?

https://www.hmart.com/ourstores/

9

hyperphoenix19 t1_j4nlcto wrote

They aren't actually operated by hmart but rather a different company that I think licenses the name or something.

10

lachalacha t1_j4oy1xx wrote

Hence them being terrible compared to actual Hmarts..

6

thepobv t1_j4ntoq7 wrote

hot take:

h mart is overrated, overpriced.

Asian groceries with smelly seafood section and bunch of staff always putting shit up on shelf with no name but tons of asian ladies customers are far superior.

8

sourmilkface t1_j4o2kbt wrote

I’m not sure if it’s just because it’s brand new but the prices at this location are absurdly low rn, especially considering what’s going on at other local grocery stores in NYC these days. Same carton of milk is 4.99 at H mart vs 8.99 at the store on my block.

6

Not_FinancialAdvice t1_j4nugdf wrote

I don't live in the city anymore, but I feel like H-Mart in our area is on the higher side on pricing. For a lot of asian food, I can typically find a lower price at local places.

I knew I was gonna get downvoted lol.

All my asian friends who cooks much prefer Asian groceries owned by Asian families.

All my white friends love h mart and cant stop talking about the book.

Reddit loves to bash on corporates and chains but it comes to somwthing they enjoy they quickly turn a blind eye.

toilerpapet t1_j4ozfch wrote

T&T is the Canadian Hmart. It's a chain store owned by Loblaw.

2

Nomadic8893 t1_j4oa8q3 wrote

yeah agree, it's mainly overpriced. better going to chinatown. but I understand they are basically charging a convenience premium and have locations all over.

4

DonConnection t1_j4o6isu wrote

My Korean mother-in-law only goes to H-Mart if there's sales. She complains that it's too expensive otherwise. She usually goes to those smaller independent Asian groceries like you mentioned. She did go to the new one that opened in Astoria often when they had their grand opening sales though.

2

Unusual-Solid3435 t1_j4qba5a wrote

Someone is downvoting everything anti-H-mart in this thread. Let me reiterate, DO NOT GO TO H MART. THERE ARE PLENTY OF SMALL BUSINESSES THAT HAVE BETTER SELECTION AND BETTER PRICING

You can go to multiple places, you know. Certain markets are better for certain things. It's not some grand revelation that you've uncovered.

Ok-Strain-9847 t1_j4nly7e wrote

Got one on Long Island. It basically has 3 parts. Produce for the Americans. Seafood for those that don't get grossed out by that that is still moving. And the rest of the stuff that has labels printed in Korean.

1

greenthumbnyc t1_j4qeuae wrote

HMart is pretty overpriced comparing to supermarkets that sell the exact same things in Chinatown. Not sure what's so great about it...yes, it is cleaner and more organized than the big Chinese supermarkets but you are paying a ridiculous markup (at least 30-40%).

Dunno wtf you're talking about, I go frequently and my folks mainly shop there. Might be some trendy dismissable business to white transplants and yupsters, but for Korean families, they are a staple grocery store that carries everything we need. I'll always be happy they're doing well.

They're mainly opening in areas with high or rising Asian populations. They know their target market and expand well. Don't get mad that there's businesses out there that don't feel the need to cater to typical demographics.

2

Unusual-Solid3435 t1_j4qcske wrote

Nice strawman, my problem with them is their stupid yuppie suburban fans that are all over reddit, talking them up like it's the best thing since sliced bread, their nasty smelling fish section, their high prices relative to small business. H mart sucks, if you don't see that, you've never shopped local.

−1

panzerxiii t1_j4qdg9q wrote

Have you ever been to an H-Mart? Never seen a smelly fish section in any of the locations I've shopped at. Always way fresher and cleaner than Chinatown markets.

Also, unless you're only going to Manhattan locations, the prices aren't really that bad lol, whenever I visit my parents in Queens I come back with a load of groceries because they're cheaper than everything near me.

By the way, they were my local small business since I was a kid, and my parents have shopped with them since their first location. I've literally grown up with them. Sorry that doesn't fit your narrative.

2

Unusual-Solid3435 t1_j4qequs wrote

Sorry that you're obsessed with defending H mart, hope you get better, you got some major brain rot. Average software engineer btw, they're all simps for H mart.
