Good luck competing with the 1,400 unlicensed stores.

$70 8th’s aren’t gonna be very popular

I am absolutely going to stop smoking untested, unregulated, probably contaminated bodega weed and go to these stores.

An extra $5 an eighth isn't worth smoking whatever chemicals that bodega ditch-weed is saturated with.

Has anyone seen their prices?!? Insane. $70 for an eighth BEFORE taxes?

I guarantee the owners never paid 70 for 8th

I mean, to be fair, the first licensed store at Astor Place has had a line down the block constantly since it's been open. It seems there's a fair amount of people who will go out of their way to patronize the legit shop instead of spinning the dice at their local unlicensed location.

Prices are insane but most likely not completely the fault of the store owners. That being said, I’ll most likely keep to my underground delivery vendors - the prices are too low compared to what the regulated vendors will charge

The comments here seem like they’re all from people who don’t follow legalization efforts in the US lol.

The first stores are always high priced, few choices, and are for tourists more than anything else. Just like in Massachusetts, this isn’t a super progressive state legislature so things will move slow. But eventually, after a few years and normalization you’ll see the prices come down, more competition, and hopefully benefits/sales like getting a free pre-roll or first time customer discount.

It’s worked in other states, it’ll likely work here after a few years. No shit $70 is expensive lol this store isn’t meant to convince you in the Bronx or Brooklyn to stop buying from your local plug

I understand the sentiment, however, does NYC or NY State even have the regulatory capability of enforcing and monitoring weed safety right now? Something like that would take considerable regulatory oversight.

As someone going for the next round of licenses... Two things I will say.

A.) Real estate is expensive, as are regulations. NY has done a really fantastic job at doing the right thing and making sure people don't skimp on stuff, but that also adds costs.

B.) Don't worry, this won't last. It's industry standard for prices to be high the first 1-3 years of a legal market before investors get their money out and wholesale prices come down.

Is the price worth the safety than YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOUR’RE GETTING or nah ? Than buying from the plug

They claim that this is the second “legal” one. Does anyone have or know of the list and dates of these places that have been issued a license? Because there are 2 other ones I have known of that have been open months before “ the first legal one”. One is literally down the block by the uptown train stairs on Broadway. The other is 8th off of Broadway down towards 6th ave. So I went in to both other stores after the first ( legal) one opened and asked. They both responded. That’s because that one has connections with people connected to the city. Thoughts?

I’ve had top of the line medmen legit taxed-out-the-ass Cali carts, and they feel/taste the exact same as nyc smoke shop carts

do the "not officially licensed but still operating" dispensaries around NYC sell vapes?

Wait till more stores start opening up. Not everyone will be able to charge $70 for the 8th. Better times will come.

I can't possibly imagine crossing a river to buy a 70 dollar 8th.

The line is because of the novelty and the tourists. New Yorkers aren't going to tolerate it. I can't imagine paying double so I can buy legally.

I don't think you're wrong here. I'm just saying that for the time being, licensed venues seem like they're not going to have any problem competing with the unlicensed spots. Maybe that will change further down the line, though, as more licensed shops open.

devolka t1_j5ukwxr wrote

Yeah. But that's my point. You're looking at opening weekend numbers and assuming those will continue. I have no plans to pay double to buy legal.

I'm sure the legal dispensaries will do fine too.

juniperaza t1_j5y3ny5 wrote

It’s not cheap lol. They charge the same prices as these dispensaries. And I’m pretty sure a tourist would also trust a legit store over a random guy trying to force you to buy his shitty weed.

Yeah the shops in midtown are decent. A lot of smoke shops push decent shit. But you’re better off just finding a good service. I hung around Washington square park a few years ago smoking with my friend and a guy came up to us handing out a card for a delivery service. Tried them out ( they were more expensive than the guys in the Bronx) the weed was really good and they moved around in the city to come to you for deliveries. Talk to a few people at the bars and shit and you’ll get hooked up. Finding decent weed at a good price ain’t too hard

It's possible the hype has already died down. I walked by on Wednesday evening and there was no line outside (though there were probably a dozen customers inside).

Part of that might have also been the big sign on the door saying that they're completely sold out of edibles. I think edibles are going to be a bigger chunk of the market than anyone realizes.
