"Mayor Adams Uses City Personnel and Funds to Create and Distribute Promotional Materials for Reelection Campaign" fixed that for you

Biting the hand that feeds. Media alarmism about crime is the entire reason he got elected in the first place.

Also he benefited off media alarmism about crime in the run up to the 2022 Midterms.

Yeah all of those poor and low income PoC that voted for Adams in the primary (and were the ones that gave him the win) were really swayed by Fox News and similar “fear mongering” media.

https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2021-nyc-mayoral-analysis/

There’s the breakdown of the demographics and districts that voted for each candidates in the mayoral democratic primary.

“Black, Latino and low-income voters from New York City’s outer boroughs gave Eric Adams a decisive edge in the 2021 Democratic mayoral primary in June. The average median income in assembly districts that the Brooklyn Borough President carried was roughly $55,000, compared to $111,000 in the districts where former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia received the largest share of votes.”

I know actual statistics aren’t fair sometimes, but to paint an entire group of voters as uninformed and fear mongering is extremely patronizing.

> all of those poor and low income PoC

as someone from that demographic and living in Jamaica Queens, I can say with confidence that a decent amount of votes from people I know were based on name recognition alone. It was a popularity contest and Adams was the guy people knew the best.

Grass8989 t1_j5vqhew wrote

I don’t doubt that name recognition helped him, but the common theme seems to be to paint everyone that voted for him as a borderline right wing fear mongerer. Last time I checked Eastern Brooklyn and the entirety of the Bronx don’t vote “right wing” nor are they Fox News target demographic.

what a stupid bunch of things to say.
Fox news isn't the only source that's been on the crime hype train, local TV stations and the post have been going even harder. Also are we going to pretend like a half of a quarter of a half of the population of NY is a great representation of opinion? It's a system not designed to capture voter opinion on issues, because the dem party of NY doesn't want that, they want to push machine candidates.

Also stop trying to use minorities to shield your shitty opinions. You aren't protecting anyone.

Grass8989 t1_j5x5yph wrote

Blame the people who didn’t vote in the primary then. You shouldn’t be discounting or ignoring the people who actually did with a “but if” scenario.

chargeorge t1_j5y9p47 wrote

Did I blame anyone? Maybe the politicians who designed a system to suppress participation or the people who try to make sweeping generalizations without an iota of critical thinking.

Low information voters. I’ve been living and working in Manhattan since I graduated college in 2020 and my life is entirely unaffected by the so called “crime wave”. I work from home and outsource my shopping to gig workers but when I do go outside to meet friends for drinks in LES I rarely see any crime. The only crime issue that needs to be addressed is people parking in bike lanes

I've lived in NYC my entire 30+ years, have lived in Washington Heights for 4+ years, take the train 5+ times/week often late back to the Heights, and I rarely see any crime. Honestly can't remember the last time I saw something worse than a lazy bumfight.

I guess it's funny to just make shit up to attempt to prove some dumbass point, but maybe try actually living here instead of brigading/shitposting like a fucking twat, or just to the fuck back to r/podunkshitholenobodycaresabout where you belond.

No they’re not… so as long as he gives them material he’s gold. And he’s not a lifelong politician so he’s incapable of not saying a dumb thing once in a while, and crime will always happen in NYC so then every publication gets to have some thinkpiece on why a crime happens after we elected a cop as mayor.

randothrowawayaccnt t1_j5xswkk wrote

>a cop

This is literally why I wrote him off, and never considered him.

He seems to have 5 press conferences a day.

We're still one of the safest big cities in the country. But the politics of fear always gets us a "law and order" asshat.

I remember when he spoke to my women’s group way before he was mayor; he kept telling us these percentages and specific crimes and I remember looking at the woman next to me saying ‘what is he talking about?!’

Those crimes are indeed up but those percentages were so inaccurate. I went away thinking…somethings not right with this one. Don’t trust him.

At least he finally went on Brian Lehrer recently and took calls from New Yorkers. De Blasio was terrible, but he was on there all the time, hearing from people and getting yelled at live on the air. And generally he was more accessible. Before then, what did Adams do? He went on Ezra Klein (New York Times) and then later published an op-ed in The Economist (hard paywall, clearly not intended for ordinary citizens/voters). I think Adams is arrogant. He thinks he's too good for media scrutiny, or even to hear from ordinary New Yorkers.

13

mowotlarx t1_j5w5gn8 wrote

I do hand that to de Blasio. He did that show every single week. He always took questions. It was a consistent spot for people to reach him. Eric Adams is all over the place, focusing mainly on cheesy shock jocks to just love him.

He was complaining yesterday about people worried that the police were recording folks who came out of a Drake concert, saying it was for their protection and to show the cops were on the job. They complained on twitter, he got the question, and blamed the people posting on twitter.

Such spin.

That’s just a mistake on his and the department’s part, and he refuses to admit it. Tell people why the cops are there - if their rationale is actually benign - before they get freaked out. Simple.

But he’s just spinning.

And blaming the people who posted to twitter (and insulting them) instead of seeing the situation from their perspective is a sign of a selfish leader who doesn’t care about his constituents.

And creating an “alternative press” to counteract the regular media is just a pissy-pants way of trying to deflect blame/criticism.

And to make it worse, he chose the Trump “fake news; press is bad; only believe what I tell you” approach.

He’s lucky NYC doesn’t have recall.
