There is enforcement on this when complaints are made. The deli by my job had this happen, got a nasty fine and now everything is labeled.

Now for the register overcharge, tell them you want an itemized receipt. By law they have to give it to you. They don't want to, do what thebruns said, vote with your wallet.

There are already laws to prevent what OP is complaining about. The problem is 99% of people do not utilize them (because they might not know about them, or feel comfortable enacting them) and get taken advantage of.

NYC is not a city for starving artists anymore. It’s become a well oiled machine for extracting capital from working professionals and hedge fund college students. Maybe it was always like this and people are now just realizing they are just side characters.

As a working professional, it’s annoying, but also I do what I do to be ABLE to live here without worrying. Living in NYC is a luxury, not a right.

Sounds like you’re self inflicting this on yourself by going to the places you feel are scams

Not all markets are like that, not all bodegas are like that. be a regular at some places and they’ll actually give you better than average treatment. And don’t tip if you don’t want to. Most people don’t tip on a cup of coffee.

This is spot on.

Figure out what the scammy stores are in your neighborhood, and don't go there. Figure out the restaurants that constantly get your order wrong, and either check on it before you leave, or don't go there.

Also, keep an eye on the register and if something doesn't seem right, just say you don't want it. I picked up some unlabeled asparagus once and when it rang up as $7.99 I just said I'm sorry, it's too expensive, I'll put it back. Problem solved.

NEVER feel guilted into tipping what the machine requests.

Everyone in NYC has that one bodega where the cashier makes up prices when you're checking out, and it's sort of a sign to avoid them when they overcharge. Sounds like you're just making very poor buying decisions almost regularly, and expect the same results as if you were making good buying decisions.

Try doing the following:

  • Buy food, beer, coffee, and snacks at a grocery store.
  • Prepare your own food/coffee instead of ordering takeout & delivery
  • Always have cash on hand to avoid the convienace fee, or forced overtipping
  • Withdrawing a set amount of cash over a set time period also helps you to budget your small purchases

It’s funny how I used to choose to pay with card to avoid the awkwardness of not leaving my change in the tip jar. Now, it’s easier to avoid forced overtipping by paying in cash!

It is against New York state law for businesses to impose a surcharge for paying by card. They are allowed to provide a discount for paying with cash, but it is illegal for them to charge more than the posted price for paying by card.

Every sign I’ve seen says prices are incorporating a discount. You can forgo the discount by paying with a credit card at your discretion.

Last week I went to the grocery store and saw and item for pretty cheap so I was like "woohoo!" and put it in my cart. I get to the self checkout and that's not the price : (

So I say hey on the shelf this item was X dollars not this Y price. They send someone to check. I point out the cheap price. The employee removes the shelf price and I get my item voided and an open charge for the sale price. ^_^

Speak up, it matters.

Shop at Costco and vote with your wallet. Unfortunately keeping cash does help in these scenarios, buy/tip with cash.

Second this, amazon fresh groceries are 1/2 the prince of my local established grocery store chains (plural). No exaggeration. Local grocery stores are only for emergencies for me, otherwise I’m saving plenty of money even after tipping the delivery person.

Yep. $9.95 delivery fee for orders under $50, while orders between $50 and $100 will include a $6.95 delivery fee, and orders between $100 and $150 will carry a $3.95 delivery fee.

Orders over $150 are free.

I'll just hold off on little items until I can do a larger order.

where are you located in nyc?? Whast borough>/? Prices have gone up all throughout my supermarket also but bodegas and delis will always be priced higher than supermarkets. Thats just how its always been. All the pizzerias around me have 2.50 - 2.75 dollar slices. I have never seen it 5 dollars in the 10 or so pizzarias that i frequent in Queens and Brooklyn. Maybe its just a Manhattan thing??

I agree as much as anyone that inflation is a pain. But most of these sound like things you could avoid. I shop at Target (they price match Amazon and Walmart!) for basics and Whole Foods for groceries that Target doesn't have because I find they have the lowest prices of bona fide grocery stores in the city for people that actually cook (aka not Trader Joe's). Costco when I have enough time to go to Sunset Park. I try to avoid local stores as much as possible because I don't find any value add in a Gristedes, for example, though there are a few that I patronize, such as the Mr. ___ stores in Brooklyn for cheap, high quality produce, or a great little Mexican market called Panaderia Atlixco deli grocery in Jackson Heights with reasonable prices.

On top of that, some of the 15 min delivery apps still have VC-funded deals. Getir seems to have a $20 off $25 offer every time I open the app. Why not try looking for new places to go to? The city certainly has gotten more expensive but that doesn't mean there aren't other options abound.

I've gone back to Dunkin' daily through the app just to be able to get the coffee I want at the price I want without being harangued by "local neighborhood baristas". I just want my coffee TF. I don't have nearly $10 every day for coffee.

I’ve always been a dunkin person but lately I’ve been really liking the pret coffee subscription. if you have a location near you, it’s $25 a month for tea/coffee & $35 a month for coffee/tea/cold brew/espresso. you can get up to 5 drinks a day, every 30 mins

The absolute bullshit that goes on in this city with food prices is ridiculous. Saw cereal for 9 dollars recently. I have a couple small deli's near me I trust but order Aldi for most of my grocery shopping (and it's cheaper than going to any of the nearby super markets for anything not randomly on sale).

Go to bigger name grocery stores. Avoid the Fine-Fare, CTown, Key Food types of shit because those places are fuckin price gougers. A place like Wegmans, Target, or Costco will never have a cashier ringing up a BS price.
