I just got hired at a veterinary clinic in January along with two other people. I was suppose to be working 30 hours a week (Mon-Fri 12-6pm). The first few weeks in January were fine, though there was an occasional day they would give me off because they were slow / had only a few appointments. However, over the last month I have only been in to work 3 times, and those times were not the full 6 hours I was supposed to work that day. I worked February 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 15th. It seems like I won't be in work next week either, and I am at my wits end. It took me a while to find a job, I applied to so many clinics and most I never heard back from. I was excited to be hired at a place so close to my house and with decent hours / pay, but it's at the point where I'm practically not working at all.

I want to know if I woukd be eligible to file for unemployment (I live in California), and if I am what date I would put as starting my claim. Any help would be appreciated, looking online wasnt clear enough for me to understand if I'm eligible. Thanks!

You aren't eligible for unemployment while you're still employed.

If you quit, you may have a case in California under the "constructive dismissal" doctrine. I'm not an employment lawyer, but based on minimal searching it seems like a reduction in hours without other acts of hostility/retaliation would probably not qualify. You could call a real lawyer and ask if they have free consultations.

You started in January m-f but have only been there 3 times??? Damn.. did you ask them if it will pick up? Maybe start a second job...if you're working 3 days every 8 weeks

Sorry if sound ignorant

I worked more in January but only 4 times in the whole month of febuary. I asked and they said next week is looking the same with slowness. My worry about getting a second job is if this one finally does pick up I won't be able to keep both because im also a student.

Ohhh oh oh, ok makes sense. Wild, I figured animal clinics were usually pretty busy and in need of ppl since 2020. SOOOO putting out good vibes that you get extra work!

If I was hired somewhere else my hours would be similar and then if it got back it would be overlapping

I love the people I work with and environment too, so I'm afraid to quit and wind up without a job at all or at a worse clinic, but I need money
