I did not see this coming, nor did anyone else .

My company (multi-national retailer) has laid off myself and hundreds of other US corporate employees. It’s been a tough and long day but I am trying to keep moving forward and want to make the transition to a new job as seamless as possible.

I am receiving my severance package tomorrow. I intend to negotiate the compensation for a longer length of pay of my salary. I intend to ask for this due to a non-compete making a search much more difficult as most of our competitors is where most of my job opportunity lays.

How do I best go about going about this? Do I need to state these reasons or should I keep it confidential?
