Last year I joined Eharmony for three months. I cancelled the membership and declined to renew and turned off automatic payments. I haven't heard from them since. No notice, no bill, nothing.

This morning I got a notice from a collection agency that I owed $781 for non-payment. I cancelled. I repeat - I cancelled.

I'm trying to buy a house and I can't have a collections on my credit. Help?

Update: I called Eharmony and they swore up and down that they sent me four emails about my account. I went through my trash, spam, and inbox and there was nothing there. I asked them to send me time-stamped copies and they refused.

I called the collection agency and talked to them. I made several statements and they will investigate whether this is a legit collection. Meanwhile the collection agency stated that they no longer report Eharmony or Match to the credit bureaus. They wouldn't state why but I think they do this so often that even the collection agency knows they are sketchy. The agent is going to get a charge-off and stated that, if she could get that, it wouldn't be on my credit history.

If I have to pay it I will but in no way do I owe this. Eharmony is a scam operation and they are lying about the supposed email notifications.

Did you use the app?If you have an iPhone, you can look at your subscriptions. Use that to track if you actually cancelled. Past that, you need to contact the company.

I also would imagine you would have received an email confirming the cancellation. Either way, need to contact the company

Blocked from what? You can call the company or reach them via email I would assume.

Don't know about ios but on android I can see any subscription initiated within an app via the play store. Don't need to use the actual app itself

You should still be able to contact their customer service with the same login information you used to create the account.

And asked them why they didn't inform you of the "debt" you had with them because even if you canceled your subscription, they should still have sent an email stating that you had a balance due at least a couple times before they sent your account to collections.

You can see subscriptions in your settings if you use iPhone and subscribed through your phone. You cannot be blocked from seeing that

I've been blocked. I don't know why that is so hard to understand. I cannot access my account I imagine because they have turned me over to collections.

What does the TOS you agreed to say as far as your obligation? I'm guessing you agreed to something dumb in a big long TOS agreement you didn't read and this is regrettably pretty common.

Asking for verification of the debt is always step #1. If it's valid your options are to pay, ignore it (not smart) or ask for a settlement which is typically outside of the scope of most company's path.

do you have any kind of confirmation of your cancellation?

I cancelled last summer. I can't find email confirmation. I checked my trash and spam folder. Nothing. My credit was all I have left.

How to cancel eHarmony manually:

Clicking on the arrow next to your photo at the top of the screen to open the dropdown menu. Clicking the “Data & settings” link. Under the “Profile Status” section, click the link within ”To permanently delete your profile, click here”

(IF YOU HAVE REMAINING PAYMENTS, YOU WILL STILL BE CHARGED THOSE PAYMENTS.)

IN ORDER TO PROVIDE CONTINUOUS SERVICE, EHARMONY AUTOMATICALLY RENEWS ALL PAID SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR THE SERVICES ON THE DATE SUCH SUBSCRIPTIONS EXPIRE UNLESS YOU CANCEL AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE THE END OF YOUR CURRENT TERM.

If you did not follow this process, you may not have actually cancelled it. See if you are still able to log in. If you can, you did not cancel it.

I am unable to log in. My account is blocked. Customer service is open on the west coast in 8 minutes. I hope to try to make a deal with them. I did cancel. The date was on my computer and I remember doing it but I don't have the cancellation email anymore.

You have two options, you can fight this by asking for verification of the debt from the collections agency, as well as notifying the credit agencies and providing your own proof (which you don’t seem to have?). Or you can pay it and hope the damage is not enough to impact your home purchase. If your priority is to buy a house and you don’t have proof of cancellation, your best bet is to pay it off and move on. You stand to lose more if it’s temporarily removed from your credit while you fight is and then added back right before closing on a home, ranking your home purchase.

Look up on the internet for the process on how to deal with collection companies. It starts with having them prove the debt. Watch your credit report and dispute the charge if it shows up.

This just reminds me why I buy few things online, never give my real data - put in names like Pissoff and such, pay with those cards that you create digitally, have separate emails for this sort of crap... and join nothing that takes a rent off my account.
