Application fee was $75. This was in NJ. I got accepted, asked some follow up questions, tried calling, etc, nobody responded to me after a week or so, so I was like fk this place I'll just live somewhere else. Come to find out they charged me $500 for like 'reneging' on the accepted apt? Can I charge this back on my card?

Also. I just discovered this charge now, and it was from a year ago. Not sure if my Visa will still be able to help with it.

A year ago, doubtful. It's usually 60 days for fraudulent activity and maybe up to 120 days max if it's a product quality issue.

Fuck. Have another charge that is for $1k (around the same time that the rental company charged me), that is completely fraudulent and I have no idea who it's from.

I'm thinking giving the rental company a bad public review might coerce them into paying me back.

Paying an extra 500 to 1000 a month didn't make you stop and think something is wrong? To most people that would be a major red flag come bill paying time.

It was for my Visa debit card. I just had a ballpark balance that I kept an eye on, didn't look too deeply at my statement. Lesson learned.

Well, Visa is just a card payment network. You have to go to the card issuer (i.e. the bank) to dispute, or try to.

I talked with my bank, Charles Schwab, and they asked me to provide more documentation. Basically what happened is I was approved but I never 'reserved' the apartment. The apt is charging me because they're saying that I 'reserved and then reneged'. I checked our email convos and this didn't happen. I'm guessing they'll claim that I 'reserved' the apartment over the phone or something.

Don’t use debit cards. You can’t charge back in many cases at all.

1500 is not enough to catch your attention when it happened but it’s a problem now? Hmm…
