If you’re both on the mortgage, it’ll hit both. How late did you pay it?

Were you less than 30 days late making the payment? It won't show on credit as late until you are at least 30 days late. If both your names are on the mortgage I would expect it would show on both yours and spouse's credit reports.

Is it possible that, when we refinanced the house, only her name was on it? Otherwise, I can’t explain why my credit is fine since it was missed mortgage payments that should dunk us.

Lenders can take some time to report the lates. They can also do a good faith removal of the lates if you ask them. It’s usually worth a shot, especially when it’s an accident

But to answer your question, I would have absolutely no idea. It’s a little concerning that you wouldn’t know if you’re on the mortgage, you’d have to have signed the application as well as the closing docs.

And if the mortgage is listed as a tradeline on credit karma, then obviously you’re on it, unless it’s the old mortgage that hasn’t been removed yet. Check your report and verify it’s the new lender/servicer on there and that the balance is different than the old one, that’ll indicate that you’re on the mortgage. If it’s just your wife, the new mortgage won’t be on your credit at all

Your county / city / state probably has a website when you can look at property ownership and such. If there's a mortgage, there'll be paperwork there. I doubt very much that they'd put the mortgage just in her name if both of you own the home, but you never know for sure.

Almost 20 years ago now, we got an offer to refi our house -- the offer came in my wife's name even though I was sole breadwinner and she a SAHM. We filled it out and refinanced (lowering our interest rate from 6.625 to 4.875 AND reducing the term at the same time to 15 years). We know a few other people who got the same offer from Wells Fargo. In every case, SAHM, husband sole-breadwinner, and offer to the wife. We think Wells was trying to improve their gender stats on mortgages?
