From what I gather, Chase doesn't have a way to request a credit limit increase online (despite it being almost 2023) and the only way is to call the number on the card in order for a Chase rep to do it.

I just called and they told me it's not only a hard inquiry, but the rep asked me for mother's maiden name and my password.

Anyone else experience this? Does this sound right?

I told them to forget it because that's doesn't even remotely sound secure and I'll just make prepayments instead.

The hard inquiry isn't too uncommon.

The mother's maiden name is a common (though terrible) identity verification step for banks.

But if the password is your login password, I'd pass, and probably switch banks, because that screams "we have terrible account security" almost as bad as "your password can't have these blacklisted special characters" or "password can't be longer than n characters". At that point, I'd err on the side of assuming my password is stored in plaintext somewhere in their system, and change it anywhere where I'm using the same password.

If, however, it's some kind of separate identification verification passphrase you set up when creating your account, that's somewhat common, and I'd trust it if you called the number on the back of your card.

My last card had a pass phrase like that. This one legit asked for my password which came as a surprise.

On my chase account online there is an option to request a credit limit increase under "Account Services". Have you tried that?

I get this:

> We can't complete this request. This offer isn't available at this time. We're sorry for the inconvenience. Make sure you keep your income up-to-date to be considered for future offers.

Maybe not enough history or something... My previous card was almost twice what this card was, but I had closed the other one then opened this one, so perhaps not enough gap to show potential, available credit worthiness

Chase asked you for your password... wow. That is totally surprising to me (just because they are a major bank, but maybe I shouldn't be surprised!)

I have done this through their online message system and have had my credit increased. I also believe I did it in the past over the phone

Maybe I'll give the online chat a go and see how that turns out. I normally prefer that over phones anyways. Chase's phone menu system was terrible. (No, I'm not calling to learn all of my balances, statement balances, etc lol.)

Just to be clear, I send them an internal secure message using the left side menu. Now that I am looking back on it, I actually think they did not give me an increase, but I honestly can't remember. Sorry.

Here is the actual message I sent to Chase Card Services, Subject "Account Inquiry"

>I am requesting a credit line increase.
Total Annual Income: xxxx
Employment Status: [Employed/Unemployed, PT/FT]
Occupation: [your job]

They responded back in the message center the next day:

>Hello [my name],
Thank you for contacting us.

Sounds like a possibility that might beat giving them my password, hah. I'll give it a whirl

You can update your income through the website and sometimes it triggers an increase in credit limits without a hard pull.

Yea, I tried that once or twice (with real numbers) figuring it might but nothing yet.
