Where to buy crème fraiche

Please flood this text with old South Park references, but also a bunch of the recipes I have been running into recently call for it and Whole Foods doesn’t even seem to have it so I’m all out of ideas

Creme Fraiche is very easy to make yourself and also much better home made.

What you want to do is get one of those quart containers that wonton soup comes in. Fill it up with heavy cream and then add a few table spoons or more of buttermilk. Put a paper towel over it and the lid on top but don't seal it. Then you want to put it somewhere warm until it becomes solid. In the summer you can just leave it out on the counter overnight and it will be solid in the morning. This time of year you might have to leave it on the radiator for a few days. Once it's solid, put it in the fridge for 24 hours. Then it's done and ready to eat. Much milder and more buttery than what you buy. Great for baking. This is good for 10-14 days. At that point you can start another quart with what you have left over. Just mix that with heavy cream instead of buttermilk.

Whole Foods for sure has it — it’s by the mozzarella and Parmesan, same case… up top by the weird little French yogurts. They carry Vermont Creamery brand.

Depending on what exactly you're doing, sour cream should work as a substitute. Should generally work in any kind of soup/stew/sauce or as a garnish.

every cooking recipe i see says you can substitute greek yogurt for sour cream. so one day i was at the grocery, and sour cream was on sale, but yogurt wasn't. i looked at the nutrition labels on the back, and sour cream has more fat and more protein than greek yogurt.

so now i eat sour cream any place i would have yogurt. maybe breakfast with some crasins on top? for dessert with a little honey? just plain? with grated cheese on top? all yes.

(beware- people will look at you like a psycho if they see you eating a container of sour cream with a spoon.)

Trader Joe’s or weaver way. Or just make your own, it’s buttermilk and heavy cream.

Weavers Way Co-op has it if you are in the NW. Very thick creamy “Vermont Creamery” brand.

Do not buy US alternatives (Vermont, I think, produces some variant), - they are complete and utter shit.

If Whole Foods doesn't have the OG one - look up where the brand distributes elsewhere in the States, but it was spotty (I didn't see it anywhere else).

Bart's Bagels on Lancaster has their in-house cream cheese that is the closest thing to creme fraiche I've found.

Whole Foods has it, but not where you'd expect. It's not with the sour cream and cream cheese, but with the feta cheese and bleu cheese crumbles before the specialty cheese counter (at least in the art museum location).

Whole Foods and Trader Joes both have it, but honestly in almost every recipe subbing Sour Cream (or even a thicker greek yogurt) in place of Cream Fraiche will basically produce the same result. If you need a ton of it in the recipe and you sub it might be a bit tangier but honestly they're so similar its hard to tell the difference unless you're just eating them by themselves IMO.

you can sometimes find "crema" at spanish speaking grocery stores but it might not be exactly the same.
