Certification for a newly minted term with arbitrary qualifications and vague benefits.

The "sanctuary city" thing turned into a clusterfuck, so change the name to something that really doesn't mean anything and bask in the glow of irrelevant altruism.

It means that busses could start showing up every day with literally thousands of people per month - that's what happened when New York openly invited cities in the south to send illegal migrants.

In a year's time we could very easily have the parkway looking like something out the third world with the city unable to either [a] house tens of thousands of encamped people [b] admit that the policy was a disaster because they'll be eviscerated by social media and canceled out of office by extremist supporters.

This city doesn't even have the funds to build a school with air conditioning, let alone help existing homeless residents. You think it has $100m lying around to build social housing to hand out to people it's inviting the south to bus in?

Ironically the migrants in NY have now been increasingly been leaving and heading north to Canada because even they have increasingly gotten fed up of the shantytowns, crime, drugs and public defecation

>With the city’s announcement, immigrant communities around Philadelphia may wonder how the designation will actually affect them. Eusebio said that most immediately, it sets a precedent.

So nothing, it does nothing other than allow city officials in positions that really shouldn't even exist to pat themselves on the back, and for this organization to get paid with tax payer money to hand a meaningless label to useless city staffers.

>The Welcoming certification must be renewed after three years through the same process, which is particularly notable with a new incoming mayoral administration.

>Whichever candidate ultimately wins this year’s race will have to make a similar commitment towards immigrant support and inclusion, otherwise it will be clear that the cause is not a priority for them.

>“When there are changes in mayor administrations and city leadership ... having an official designation of certification and a need to re-certify holds everyone accountable,” Eusebio said.

What a joke, this is clearly a racket organization, the certificate is just a receipt for taking city money, and means nothing.

The article should have asked how much money city officials set on fire for this meaningless bullshit.

As an immigrant myself I have no fucking clue what this means or what it is supposed to do.

I wish the city would stop trying to collect these titles and instead would just do what it implies it’s doing- bring in migrants, find available housing for them, and help them find jobs in the city.

What it’s supposed to mean in its unofficial designation is that the mayor of the city/town (who also oversees the police force and can set a tone — if said police force respects and follow the mayor’s orders) will not actively prioritize arresting (or harassing) and deporting undocumented immigrants for things that would be a slap on the wrist for folks who are documented or were born here. Like a broken car tail light or some such.

The gop effectively decided to use the designation as a pretense for their little reverse freedom ride PR stunts, which, by all accounts from anyone with an ounce of compassion, are cruel if not downright sociopathic. But damn smart politics, amirite? /s
