Chengdu Famous in west. They have the best American Chinese food I've had in Philadelphia, and an extensive and delicious authentic Chinese menu.

It's really the best Chinese restaurant I've been to aside from when I lived in China.

Do they have the Chinese bbq meats? I usually have to go to Chinatown for that.

Unfortunately not. What are your favorite bbq places in Chinatown? It's been too long since I've gotten blasted on tsingtao and baijiu at a Chinese bbq.

is it easy to find "american chinese" food in china? like could i live off it if i lived in China?

vodkaismywater t1_ja61m12 wrote

No, it's mostly a product of Chinese American immigrants and didn't really make it's way back to China. Except for the very large and international cities, China doesn't really have a tradition of eating food from other cultures.

I found one Chinese American restaurant when I lived there, and it was in Shanghai which is probably the most international Chinese city. It was in a neighborhood that's very popular with American and European expats, so mainlanders were certainly not their target demographic.

I was always curious about that place but the reviews are all over the place. And it looks a little ratchet from the street. What do you recommend?

When my parents owned their chinese restaurant, sesame chicken was just a non spicy general tsos chicken with sesame seeds.

The one Chinese spot at reading terminal market is really good. Haven’t found a place in Philly that really compares yet.

my fav: China Inn in West Philly. some of the best fake meat options i’ve had as a meat eat (and yes, mimicking deep fried chicken chunks is among the easier meats to fake but still so many places do it poorly)

Aldi's General Tso's chicken is quite good also. It's not spicy.

Trader Joe's Kung Pao chicken is good too
