I wouldn't be surprised if these sudden cold snaps followed by warm weather have weakened some of the tracks.

That was my thought on the falling facade. Eventually, things fail, especially in those sorts of conditions.

Freeze/thaw cycles can damage stone if there’s water, since it’s the expansion of the ice that caused the damage (same thing that causes potholes). I think in this case it’s more likely that cold just makes metal brittle and more likely to crack (as noted in the article).

Yeah. It may run on a weird gauge (PA Trolley Gauge) but it's still heavy rail.

Defiantly heavy rail, it is also wide gauge unlike the Broad Street subway which is standard US rail gauge.
