I got you no worries. I honestly was just looking on the website and found everything very confusing. They use terms like over the counter and in the mail. Also if I'm renewing do I need to bring all the stuff again? Appreciate the help. Def going to the one on Oregon. I I guess I'll just bring more than what I actually think I need lol
I think it was: birth certificate, old/current license, proof of residence like utility bill, and social security card.
I didn't think you'd need those things to renew. Just when you first get the Real ID.
I'd expect you to be good with the expiring (but not yet expired) license and the camera card.
Source: none. I'm just speculating.
I needed them to switch from regular license to Real ID. Yeah maybe you don't need them to renew.
I was able to renew my license to real ID online. They had my stuff on file and sent it via mail. Super painless.
We attempted to do that a couple weeks ago, and after we submitted and paid, they still sent us camera cards and mentioned we had to go in person. It has been a while since I have had my picture taken for an ID. im guessing they want a more current photo.
Yeah, you need a new photo every 4 years. I don’t think you’ll need any additional documents besides the camera card, since they have it on file.
This is probably true but I must have slipped through the cracks. My license expired in 2020 during the pandemic and they just let me get a new one by mail (with my old picture). A couple months ago I decided to get the real-id and went through the online channel for it. They approved it and my expiration date was extended to 2028. I will have a picture of ~19 year old me on my id when I'm ~30.
Yeah, when you get a Real ID before your current ID expires, they extend the expiration by 4 years.
You know what I definitely read your comment wrong. I thought you said you need a new photo every 4 years! Not that they expired every 4 😂 oops
But yeah for further reference for anyone else. anyone who got their first id after 2002 (I believe) you can apply to get the real-id online and they will let you know if they need any extra info and if not you’ll just get approved.
I brought my passport instead of my birth certificate but they said it “wasnt verified”. So I either had to come back with my birth certificate or have them send my passport to Harrisburg to be verified. I thought they were fucking with me but I guess its a thing in a few states. I looked it up a long time ago but I think it was because because I wasn’t born in PA or something related to that. So I would recommend bring your birth certificate as well.

To renew when you already have one, you literally just need the camera card. You don't even need your old ID lol.

It's not "confusing" - it's literally a one pager at the top of search results:
https://www.dmv.pa.gov/REALID/Pages/REAL-ID-Document-Check.aspx
I'm sorry I'm not as smart as you.
This guy is on every Philly post and an ass in about 80% of the posts.
I measured it being thereabout 69%, but I agree - those are rookie numbers.
I have my moments as well, happens to everyone.
It also says you need three documents. Proof of ID, social security card, and proof of address. Wasn't sure if I needed to bring all this if I was renewing.
All three, and no copies in most cases (if I read that correctly).
>(if I read that correctly)
NARRATOR: He didn't.
>It's not "confusing"
You're confused. That's the instructions for getting Real ID for the first time, not for renewing a driver's license.
What are you trying to say? If one brings all the paperwork that is initially required for the REAL ID to renew one - they won't be able to get it?
The resource I linked is a catch-all for getting a REAL ID, for the first time or to renew one. There's no need to breed further confusion by splitting hairs trying to understand bureaucracy.

There is information on the state website: keywords 'real ID pennsylvania what to bring' or however you do searches. Not trying to be a smart-aleck; it's how I found information. I went down to the Oregon Ave license center on 4th st in the shopping plaza; and was in an out within 45 minutes. They are well organized and my Real Id came in the mail within a week. Make sure to listen for your number though when you are there!
