It's becoming increasingly apparent that the craziness of the current housing market unfortunately also extends to rentals. There is insane competition looking for a place in Manayunk/Roxborough or similar, so I was wondering if anyone has insight on what NJ suburbs might be good to check out with a similar vibe? Thanks in advance.
These are good recommendations, however, I'll just say if you are having trouble with how competitive the housing is in Manyank/Roxborough it's the same if not worse in the nicer/walkable NJ suburbs.
Both of your replies were my first thoughts. If you're looking at Maple Shade, I think Mt. Holly is comparable. Also consider Haddon Twp/Heights (Twp includes westmont). All those (including Cwood/Haddonfield) are on patco (and I guess Oaklyn is super close) which is probably why they'll be very expensive (easier to get to CC from there than Roxborough give or take).

You will likely pay more to live in a suburb with easy access to Philly. Also, if you work in Philly you may end up paying higher income taxes
If you live in Jersey and work in Philly your Philly Wage tax is applied as a credit against your state income tax with NJ because of the tax agreement they have. This means you effectively JUST pay wage tax and not state income tax unless you're a pretty high net worth earner. This is different from Philly suburbs in pa where you page city and state taxes.
Property taxes can be higher, especially in some areas, but there are tradeoffs.
As for OP, NJ is competitive especially if you want walking distance to Patco (because patco is great). That being said, if you're ok being a bit off the beaten path, check the areas around the Ashland station in particular (Such as Voorhees). Also Oaklyn as others have mentioned.
Haddonfield, Haddon Township, Westmont, and Collingswood all have nice downtowns, but they're super competitive as a result.
We currently live in the city proper so rent is already relatively high, and we are aware that we will have to shell out a bit more for the burbs. Neither of us works in Philly.
Collingswood might be a similar vibe but finding a house might be an issue.
tbh, I'm not sure you'll have much luck with the NJ suburbs either. It's pricey and competitive too, esp in places you want that same vibe.

Oaklyn is close everything, costs less, has bars and a few restaurants, tonewood brewery. The town/businesses have room to mature and I’m thinking of it as well
That area has a lot of potential but for some reason the town treats their downtown as a stroad and instead of apartment mixed use they are building more gas stations. Imagine once the bike path is built home prices will go up a lot.
There’s some nice burbs with main streets in South NJ but you won’t find that same vibe and walkability IMO until you hit central NJ/NNJ. Down south, Collingswood, Vorhees, Haddonfield, Pitman come to mind.
South jersey has some great walkabilty .. way better than central

It's not much less competitive, if at all, on the Jersey side. I would never rent an apartment in the suburbs - you're basically trading in all the good parts of the city without getting any of the real benefits of the burbs. We made the move years ago to Collingswood because we wanted space and peace & quiet without sacrificing proximity to our favorite spots in the city.
If you do decide it's what you want, stick with Collingswood, Haddon Township, or Haddonfield. There's really not a point in any of those towns where you're not walkable to a PATCO station. Although, word to the wise, you will start driving even the short 1 mile to the PATCO after a few months of living in the burbs.
1 bedrooms in the newest buildings around here are going for around $2000. Row homes in Collingswood go for anywhere from $2000-$2700.
I’ve always loved collingswood but check tax prices, they can be pretty high!
My brother is in collingswood in an apartment building that’s near the train into Philly. They like it. It’s very convenient.

Haddonfield is amazing, if you can swing it and dont mind that its dry. Collingswood is a great spot too. Cherry Hill has parts that are really nice, as does Moorestown.
Collingswood and Westmont are great towns, but the market is impossible right now. I would recommend Audubon or Barrington for more affordable options that are still good. You would just have to park and ride PATCO as opposed to walking.

I live out in Runnemede and I love it! The whole area - Runnemede, Voorhees, Magnolia (even Somerdale is nice enough)!

You’ll probably pay more in New Jersey and have less to do! But hey it’s your life, you can always be one of those people who live in the burbs and comes into the city every weekend!
