This problem won't go away without alleviating poverty and sustained longterm investments in the hardest hit communities. As long as we're just willing to farm out the job of government to grieving parents, non-profits and an endless list of foundations, we'll get a new version of this every three years

Shootings and violent crime went down significantly from the 90s to the mid 2010s, with increases in poverty in some places.

The problem with saying “gun violence won’t go down until we alleviate this other problem” is that you’re trying to affect the problem indirectly.

Alleviating poverty is a worthy goal in itself. Alleviating violence is a worthy goal. They are not necessarily that causal. There is correlation certainly, but you can work on either one by itself

Sigh. Even philly mag has a paywall. It only let me read one of the linked people’s stories before asking for money.

Yeah, I pay for the Inquirer. No way I’m paying for Victor Fiorillo’s “journalism.”

I really wish everything would just go back to ad-supported. I have yet to see a plugin for mobile that makes bypassing just as easy as computer.

UGH! I just kept reading it in incognito mode. So annoying that important stories like this have a paywall. IF they want to make me pay for stuff like "50 things to do this weekend", fine, but you would think they'd make exceptions for these kinds of stories.
